Please note, that I want to bring a Canadian car from Nova Scotia Canada to the Villages, and register it there. What must I do? Do I have to take it to customs or just register of motor vehicles in Lady Lake Fl.? Thanks

Not sure. This site is the one that belongs to the entity that will register your car. It is Sumter County Tags & Registration - Randy Mask - Sumter County Tax Collector . Not the town of Lady Lake. If you are in Lady Lake then your county is Lake & they should have a similar website. In any case, the directions I see for registering your car refer to a state, not a country so you may have to call them to find out. But they may be very similar. ie: proof of you are who you are & you own the car. The following was taken from the above web site.
"To register your vehicle in Florida we will need the following: All registered owners must be present. If one or more registered owner is not able to be present in the office, this packet or this form will need to be completed, with original signatures Photo identification- State issued driver’s license or ID card for each registered owner Original out of state title (If you have a lien on your vehicle you will need to ask for a letter of request from our office to have the title released to us for registration) Proof of FLORIDA insurance through a FLORIDA agent; (a card, policy or binder will need to be shown in office) The vehicle for VIN verification weather permitting, or a completed form HSMV 82042 Bill of sale if vehicle has been purchased within the last six (6) months" Hope this helps, let us know what you find out & your success story. |

And do not forget the several hundred dollar fee for bringing a car into Florida, it was around $400 to $500 per vehicle when we moved here in 2013.

You need to import the car which requires paperwork (cost?) at the border. It’s not as straight forward as registration. The Facebook group “Canadian Snowbirds” has some info on this.

Contact the state. Typically, Canadian cars are not built to THE USA pollution standards. Might be cheaper to sell and buy when you get here.

I am also Canadian who at one time brought his car to WA state. The process was so simple I could not believe it: just to to a License Plate office with proof of residence in the USA

It’s not really a fee, it is the payment of Florida sales tax based on the current value of the vehicle.

Florida ain’t California. No inspection or emission testing in the Sunshine State.
