Default Leaders gutters and sink holes

Ever notice most homes that have sink holes Have a leader near the hole. Seems to me that amount of water concentrated in one place might be the cause. What is your opinion?

My opinion is that sinkholes generally appear after a lot of rain.

What is a "leader"?

A leader is a pipe that runs from the gutter on your roof to the ground

True sinkholes are usually caused by a failure of the subterranean rock, which is highly soluble limestone (notice the white spots on your plumbing fixtures ?). I have a problem with the un named news source calling the Alhambra "washouts" sinkholes. They are caused by a failure of storm drain piping.

Not worried, A pop up would still have a concentration of water in one spot. Next time it rains look at the amount of water coming out of a drain pipe [leader]

No. Are you serious? You do know there are thousands of them (down spouts) here? Probably well over 100,000.

In our neck of the woods, those are called downspouts.

I was going to say a leader is a person and a down spout or drain pipe brings the water to the ground. Also a pop up is a type of camping trailer, not sure what it has to do with sink holes. Always find it interesting to see different names of things from different parts of the country.

A pop up is always a good idea. Moving water away from the house is smart. I don’t see many pop ups around. Most don’t know what they are, some are on a tight budget and others don’t care.

As for sinkholes, any subterranean erosion will accelerate a sinkhole. There are ways to predict the likelihood of a sudden collapse sinkhole on your property but that testing (geological survey) is about $10k. And more than one RE agent advised me not to do the test because, “ you may not like what you see and you are required by law to share those results with a future buyer.” When it comes to sinkholes, you take your chances or live somewhere other than central FL.

Getting back to pop ups. If you can spare the couple bucks, do it. If you’re handy, it’s a relatively easy DIY project.

In Ohio, we call that a 'downspout.'

Now to the other poster, what's a "pop-up?"
