Default Publix-Spanish Plaines picture

For those who used to shop here, it looks like they are leaving the front alone, and demolishing everything inside, as well as the back wall. I took a picture of the back this afternoon, and looks like a boatload of stuff to haul away before they do anything else.

I wonder why they had do do something as drastic as tearing down the whole store for a remodel. I can't imagine the plaza is that old. Anway, looking forward to seeing what they end up with.

My understanding is that they inherited an old Albertsons site which never really fit their own store design and layout. Hence the total gut and rebuild.

Publix did the same thing to our local store in Tampa.
It was only 20 years old but they had so many roof problems they decided to do a complete teardown.

Many times it is cheaper in the long run to start with nothing rather than try to retrofit and remodel. The utilities embedded in the floor and through the ceilings probably all had to be relocated to fit the new design. We'll all find out when they are finished.

I was told the new layout will be slightly smaller, but with the addition of a drive-through pharmacy

I had heard that too. I go by their every week to two weeks while donating platelets at the One Blood Center at the South end of this shopping center.

The front sees little activity. I now see they are working from the back.

Waste of money in my opinion. That was one of the more pleasant Publix to shop at with nice wide isles. But with a lot of their prices I guess they can afford it.

Default Picture update

Picture update of the rebuild. Looks like they've started installing stuff- wires, conduit, other stuff.

I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised. I know it is hard to believe but in many cases it is easier to tear down and start fresh. Code may have required it be done that way also. I'm optimistic. We miss the store a whole lot.
