So I guess folks wouldn't have a problem with a pilot smoking a joint between flights, or a Surgeon, or the Airport van driver?

I don't think anyone should get so hung up on the term old biddie. Heck, I've described myself as one at times! When redwitch first said it, she then explained it.
"Um, Gracie, you are not an old biddie. An old biddie is mean-spirited, jealous of those younger, healthier, richer, etc. An old biddie does her absolute best to make those around her feel inferior. BTW -- I've known old biddies who are in their 20s. It just happens that this go round I mentioned old biddies in their 60s and 70s. It ain't an age thing, it's a behavior thang." Quote:

I don't know, ask the poster who said it's a bad thing.

Why did you make that leap? Just because I may wish something to be legal, doesn't mean I wish people to go crazy with it. They can enjoy it after work, on the weekend, just like people enjoy their alcohol. They both have very similar effects...except alcohol makes you prone to violence, makes you sick, and makes you lose inhibition and do things you shouldn't do. Marijuana is the "buzz" without those side effects. It's why 20 states have decided prohibition of it is pointless. The legal drug manufacturers (big pharma), the alcohol makers (Beer, wine, spirits), are the ones who keep pushing for it to be illegal. Their market would plummet. They know that. |

The OP started this thread by making a reasonable comment ... workers were smoking pot on the job, and she expressed surprise with the implication she did not approve. Now, some posters may want to legalize pot or not, but using drugs on the job is a common sense no-no and it is not difficult to understand why it should not be permitted. I also note that a number of posters seem to express trendy opinions about this as well ... recycling the arguments we've all heard our entire lives. It's no worse than alcohol etc, don't be so up-tight yadda, or using sarcasm to write snarky replies and in effect belittle the OP. If you think it's ok for maintenance workers to smoke pot on the job, and using your amenities fees, just come out say it plainly. I am curious to see who truly support such a position. |

If you are implying my post stated that sex is bad, I believe you just want to argue. I will repeat that drug use and sex are glorified on the television and at the movies. This was not the case years ago and it will be interesting to see where society goes from here. I was a flower-child and even lived very close to Haight-Asbury. Yes, there was Woodstock and most of us seem to have survived that. Each generation has their unique traits and many of us remember ours as the generation of "free love" and all. But we also remember growing up, going to college, getting a job, getting married and having children.......in that order. Yes, as we grew beyond smokin, drinking and free sex, we moved beyond the sweetness of youth to grow-up to be responsible persons - holding jobs and raising families. Will that be the same path for the youth of society today? Who knows - certainly not me. But I do worry that more and more youth of our society see life as one big dangerous party. They don't get to see June Cleaver or Ozzie and Harriet types. Their role-models on TV and at the movies portray a life full of drug use, murder and violence. Many teens don't have employment, have mom and dad supporting them and play (often violent) video games all day. If they do have a job, smoking or drinking ON-THE-JOB (as the original op posted) could be a very worrisome sign of bad things to come.
It is clearly different from our generation but who knows what will shake out in the end. I'm old....I worry.

Russ.. I can't believe what you just said. You..a healthcare professional who sees first hand the devastation that comes to people through drug abuse and you can stand there and be in favor of legalization? I'm stunned. Wow! I can't believe it.

Smoking weed is petty stuff to fret about. That is an opinion, folks.
What if their were two people on that janitorial crew? One smoked dope but other than that was in no way a scofflaw. The other had never touched drugs or alcohol in their life but drove to the job with no drivers license and no insurance, was years behind in child support payments and had been convicted of animal cruelty? We can't see that behavior, so they get a pass while a panel of INTERNET judges focus on Joe Toke. It reminds me of a scene in the movie "Off Limits" where Dix says: "You're floating' in a big sea of **** and instead of just staying' in the boat, no, you reach out and you pick up this one little turd and you say "This turd, well THIS turd ****es me off. I'm gonna do something' about THIS turd!" " For those who want to compile a list of TOTV potheads, include me. I have smoked for 50 years. I did stop for my last 21 years in the military because of urinalysis testing. If it is a gateway drug, the gate needs some oil, as I have never used any other illegal products....oops..scratch that...I tried true Absinthe in the backwoods of Switzerland and some weird drink in Korea that made me think I was walking two feet off the ground. The former was intentional while the latter was a blindside. I truly believe that the Pro Weed/Anti Weed gap is generational. Weed enhances the experience when you are listening to Traffic or Santana or Iron Butterfly, but won't help Lawrence Welk at all. |

The point I was making is that to have border patrol agents lose their life due to marijuana smuggling is a shame. Lives lost for what? It's not noble - it's pointless. Legalization is happening in many states as described earlier. Yes drug abuse is awful but it happens now despite all the attempts to keep it out of the country. I don't think what we've been doing for the past 50 years is working. Do you? Time to try a different approach is all I'm saying. I'm a results oriented person and I don't see the results. Something must change. |
