My wife is looking for employment, particularly within a school. Not teaching but perhaps in the cafeteria or within busing like a monitor. Does anyone have any insights or connections?

Step One would be to check Lake, Marion and Sumter School Districts websites. I see positions for bus aide, cafeteria workers, etc.

Also, I contacted HR and they should start recruiting for the new school (Middleton) at end of year/beginning of next year. So, if that area is of interest, there should be a lot of openings..

I looked at the positions available at the school. They list a number of responsibilities and qualifications but I didn’t see anything on salary. Does anyone have any idea on how much they pay for teachers and other positions?

I don't know salary but have heard FL isn't great for salaries (NOT just these positions). I have a friend who substituted at The Charter school briefly and said it was poor. IF you're from "up north" probably can't compare.

Pay scales aren't listed. However The Village's Charter School site says they pay a substitute $82 a day. So that's about only $10 an hour? That seems pretty low. I may do it a couple days a week to be busy/needed somewhere, but definitely not for the money..

Most of the jobs probably pay less than fast food or construction and most want 2 years of college or passing a general skills exam (for a teachers assistant).. Very interesting.

Minimum wage is $10/hour. Most fast food jobs pay $10/hour. Most construction jobs pay more than $10/hour. The Villages doesn't pay their employees well at all. However, most of their employees are part-timers collecting social security. They only work 3 days a week. If they earn too much, it reduces their social security checks, and they just end up working for the money they would've gotten if they weren't working at all.

So most employees who work for the Villages don't WANT good paying jobs. They just want something to get them out of the house, be productive, engage in human contact with others, maybe exercise their minds and bodies (depending on the job) and continue contributing to society while they're still able. The money is more of a bonus - grocery fund.

Only if one receives Social Security before full retirement age, do their SS benefits get reduced $1 for every $2 earned over $19,800. Then in the year of they reach full retirement age, it’s reduced $1 for every $3 earned over $19,800. At and after full retirement age (FRA), one can earn as much as they like without reduction in benefit.
At and after FRA, the issue of how much of your social security is subject to taxation. But the discussion of how to calculate provisional income and AGI (adjusted gross income) and taxable income to determine how much of your social security is subject to taxation is for another discussion.
