this valve is a new 1 to me - appears to be either nylon or plastic fitting - turning cw/ccw has no effect & concerned 'pulling' may cause pipe burst,,, feed pipe's cpvc
better off turning off wtr at street/house ??? need to paint behind commode thanks in adv |

Pull it in or out that is the way it works. Surprised me too.

most likely a pull/push valve.
Pull out to turn water off....push in to turn on. Hold assembly with your other hand when pulling out to minimize stress on fitting. Reminder: in = on (2 letters) out = off (3 letters) |

you're ALL genius - afraid to pull for fear of having to call a plumber on a sun which's probably 2x time
thanks, bud ! when we left atl, i posted a note in the garage for the new owner - location or irrigation control boxes, last time furn filters changed, etc,,, he'll probably not know how to change a filter but that's his problem now - what about my hot garage ? :-) |

I also squirt some wd40 or equivalent and let it set for few mins. IMO makes it easier. I definitely spray the cheap PVC shut off valve which if it haven’t been cycled in years will most likely leak?

Replace them with shark bite valves. Cut off the plastic valves and and install the shark bite. Push in and it'll snap on. No fuss, no muss.

If you are fearful of breaking the valve and causing a flood, shut the main House valve off first then shut the stop off by pulling the knob straight out. Then turn your main valve on and paint away.
Note : China is not a forgiving material. Be carful. |

Swamp coolers work by evaporation so they do not cool in high humidity environments just make it more humid.

The valves are junk. I have replaced all but 2 of them and will do the other 2 soon. The valve for my dishwasher (kitchen sink), both bathrooms and garage sink kept popping off. We would run the dishwasher and would not get any water and would have to rerun it. It can get kind of pricey if you have a plumber do it but if you are having problems it is worth it. They are just really cheap.

Why do you need to turn the water off to paint behind the commode?

I have been told that if water damage is due to leakage from a valve with shark bites, it will not be covered by homeowners insurance. It must be a compression fitting. I don't know if this is true or not, but have been told that by a plumber in another state. Anyone else have info on this?

The plastic push-pull valves are easily removed by turning them counter clockwise while pulling them. Only the last 1/4 inch of the feed pipe is affected by the shark bite type connection. A guy at Lowe's told me is was necessary to cut them off because they damaged the feed pipe. Wrong.

Good post. I learned a bunch. I ran into same issue when I bought here. I went to Home Depot, picked up a valve and asked an employee how it worked. He showed me and I felt kind of stupid. Now I have to learn how to change them. I have no problem sweat soldering a copper pipe but I’m reluctant to mess with breakable plastic. I’m glad to learn the in-on, out-off. If it was lefty loosie, tightie righty the post may have gone in a totally different direction. Lol
