NJ condo complex to use DNA to track dog droppings

RIVERDALE — A northern New Jersey condominium complex is taking a scientific approach to catch dog owners who don’t scoop the poop.

The Grand at Riverdale has told residents their dogs’ mouths will be swabbed for DNA and any droppings found on the property will be tested in order to fine the owners. The first offense will cost $250 and subsequent fines will rise as high as $1,000.
Grand resident Clara Humphrey tells The Record newspaper she guesses people spoiled it for themselves because they didn’t pick up.
The condo complex of eight four-story buildings will use the Tennessee-based DNA-matching service PooPrints to track down offenders.
Dog owners face a $100 fine if they don’t have their pets tested by Nov. 1.

The place where my son lives in Greenville, South Carolina does the same thing. You never see dog poop anywhere. Guess it works!

Urine is not considered an ideal source of DNA due to the low concentration of nucleated cells present in urine.

Great Idea!

I must say, after reading several posts about this topic I am a bit concerned about finding this to be a problem at TV.

We are not dog owners. We have had many dogs and cats over the years and when the last kids left home we chose to be pet free also. We loved and enjoyed our pets but never expected others to enjoy or even tolerate them. To each his own....

We have dear friends who have a couple of dogs who jump up on us each time we visit. We are not comfortable with friend's pets taking center stage when socializing in their home. We tend to cut our visits short and wouldn't if their dogs weren't so obnoxious.

I know TV is a dog friendly community and that is great. But pet owners who do not respect the rights of other property owners should be accountable and responsible for their pets. Maybe this is a great way to do just that. Obviously there are other communities out there with the same problem.

Here's the thing, there is no dog problem. No pee problem, no poop problem....

Just as there are other communities that do have dog problems there are other communities that don't allow dogs. One of them might be a better fit.

You're right, it's not a dog problem, it's a people problem. The dog will do it's thing wherever it's inconsiderate owner takes it. Then it becomes a habit. There would not be a problem if the owner would train it's dog to do it's thing on the owners lawn.

It would appear that demanding dog owners agree to a DNA sampling has Constitutional issues. Now this is coming from someone that could live in a world without pets. Pet s and their owners create more discussion then the Federal budget

I can see it now. Thousands of people lining up at each Regional Rec Center to have their dog's mouth swabbed for DNA.

Yes, I can see it now. Who will pay for a DNA profile on each dog? I guess they can hire a CSI type of group to collect the evidence and then we can have a group of Jose Baez type of lawyers running around saying that the DNA samples were corrupted.

Where will the DNA profiling end? Will the mixed breeds still play with the pure breeds?

Seriously, kiddies, I'm assuming you visited TV prior to moving here. I'm assuming you didn't buy your home online, win it on a game show or in a church raffle. Didn't see a problem then? Now you do?

Look in the mirror, that is the problem.

It usually is... Funny how hard it is to see yourself objectively. We're always the one in the right...

I think this sums up the crux of the matter:
"We loved and enjoyed our pets but never expected others to enjoy or even tolerate them." (by dotti105)
Just because TV is an exceedingly dog-friendly community, it doesn't mean everybody should provide their property as a canine toilet for those who refuse to use their own property as one.

I think you got the point I was trying to make! As stated previously, it is not the pet (usually) it's the owner who has the disrespect for other's property.
