Smile Villagers are Great! and generous!

Yesterday we saw a plant in someone's landscaping that we loved. Took a picture of it and were going to take it to the nursery to buy one since we had the perfect spot for it. Hubby decided to knock on the door and ask the person the name of the plant. What a nice guy!! He said he didn't know the name of it, but that it spreads and offered to give us a small plant about 8 inches tall that was a baby of the large one. Every day I continue to be amazed as to what great and generous people who live here. If any one can identify this plant, I would love to know the name of it. Thanks all!

It looks like an agave or a yucca plant to me.

Don't think it's an agave, but yucca is a possibility. It kind of looks like a flax lily to me, but then again I'm no plant expert. Here are some pictures of both flax & yucca which might help JN as she's seen the plant live and from different perspectives:

Having seen it up close, so far it looks like some of the yucca pictures you all have sent me links to. Since there are so many varieties, it's hard to tell. I'm hoping that it isn't one of those that grows to 30 foot tall and is a domesticated version that stays short. I think it is a succulant since the leaves are thick and hearty and remind me of a cactus.

Judging by your description I'd have to agree that it sounds more like a Yucca. The growths on the Faux Lilys are more like the kind of palms leaves you would find being used at Churches on Palm Sunday, except shorter! Generally speaking Yucca's can grow up to 8 feet and there are about 40-50 species of them. If you would like to read more about them along with identified pictures of some of the different species, click this link:

It is absolutely not a flax lily, nor is it a yucca. It is one of the many in the family known as Agave.
As far as which variety, it might be one of the many commonly known as 'variegata'. A good source for identification and culture is Tips and Advice on Outdoor Gardening, Flower Gardens, Plants, & Seeds - Dave's Garden

I believe you've gotten us in the right church with the Agave Variegata variety. Here's a picture of the Agave Angustifolia and it appears to be a dead ringer for the picture jnieman posted. Well done!

Thanks everyone for their input! I really apprectiate your solving my plant mystery. I'm glad it isn't a yucca because they grow so tall!

It is a beautiful plant, but after reading some of the following web page I'm not so sure I would want to have it. Besides I'm happy with our Faux Lily! Anyway, I thought I'd let you know of this page and it tell you quite a bit about the plant, including how large it gets, and so you can determine for yourself if it's for you:
