Default Caution for Villagers

I received this from one of the ladies in our church yesterday and just wanted to pass it on. Sorry if this is a repeat, but I didn't find it anywhere on the forum.

Notice from Sumer County Sheriff's Office

FYI - now on the District website

Village Community Development Districts

Notice from Sumter County Sheriff's Office

Residents of The Villages have reported a person knocking on resident’s doors and windows requesting $20. This person has been knocking on doors and windows in the early morning hours (3:00 am to 4:00 am) in several neighborhoods in The Villages. The person states that he needs the cash to purchase gasoline so he can drive his mother, a fellow Villager and neighbor, to the hospital.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is advising residents to look to see who is knocking at their door before opening it, at any time during the day or night. Residents should not open the door for people they do not recognize or feel comfortable with. Instead, residents should CALL 911 to report the suspicious person.

I don't know if this was part of this or not. But a couple of months ago at the house we were renting in sanibel I awoke to what I swore was the doorbell about 2 or 3am. By the time I got up and grabbed my glasses there was no one outside I could see. I'll venture to say this was the end of September..prior to us moving to our new home. Of course I didn't go out to investigate. Just looked out a few windows and up and down the street. Anyway this posting brought that to mind. But no...never open your door to anyone in the middle of the night especially if the circumstance seems odd. I would have called in a suspicious person if I had seen anyone but from my vantage points I didn't see any movement on the block. We thought maybe I heard clocks chiming and mistook it as the door bell but I never really believed that.

I was wondering why the Gilchrist gate off of Buena Vista Blvd. doesn't have a gate house that is manned like Sanibel gate. Also it is always left open, even late at night. How and who could we take our concern to?

With a little investigation you will find that this is a community with gates, NOT a gated community. All roads are county mantained and open to the public.

if you truly do not know who to contact with a concern whether for information or in an emergency you should sit down right now and figure it out. During or after an "incident" is too late!!!

For those who moved to TV because you thought it was a gated community, hopefully by now you have discovered it is NOT. Access whether there is a gate, a guard or nobody is NOT DENIED to ANYBODY seeking to drive in!!!!!!!

The so called gates only function is to regulate traffic.

Your home here in TV has no more restricted access to anybody who wants to get to your house than anywhere else you have lived....UNLESS...you lived in a truly gated community (if you did you know the gating here in TV is eye wash only).

None of the above means you are any less secure or safe. In fact as a resident of TV you are most likely living in one of the safest environments of your life (most likely!!).

Know what you have to do or who to call before it happens. Make sure each of the people who live in your home know exactly what their "job" is BEFORE anything happens. Be prepared and enjoy the life style of TV which is why most of us moved here.

not sure who to call, but if you really need a quick answer, ask the guard at the Sanibel gate. I think the gates will be closed when the construction is finished. Also the traffic will be less when the construction crews aren't going in and out so much.
