It is not permitted and even though you'll likely get away with it it is wrong. 4)not everyone wants your dog sniffing them. A 6foot lead is the law. Those leads that extend beyond that are not legal, but many lazy owners could care less so don't be surprised when someone gets upset with you. 5)a dog is part of your family not others so don't expect them to act like it's human. 6)riding with your dog on your lap while driving is stupid. You not only don't have the reflexes you had when younger, you're easily distracted...so cut it out.

A community that is dog friendly also has dog owners who are responsible and respect the rights of others. Get with the program and don't be part of the problem. I love dogs, but some owners need extended training.
Your post contains a lot of common sense and courtesy, but I would like to see black letter law that all the things stated as "illegal" are actually illegal.

You have just stated the very obvious facts.

Once again, why the post?
it wouldn't need to be posted if there weren't a lot of dog owners who don't do what you say as "the very obvious facts." Unfortunately there are dog owners who don't see it as you do....hence the reminder. Obviously it was not aimed at those who already understand this and need not reply.

I have to raise the BS Flag and say another whinny post.

I'll didn't see it here and beings we live in three counties please state the law limit in the three counties.
Florida Dog Leash Laws - County by County :: Jacksonville, Florida Dog Bite Lawyer Wood, Atter & Wolf

You have say on your property, but common areas are not your property. Common areas were paid for by bonds which property owners paid for and pay for up keep by monthly amenities fees.

Only Championship golf course are private. Several resident courses have common paths running through and along side of them specially in the older districts.

You and I have No say so who or who can't be on property we don't own. We can bitch about it, but that's about it. Which this post seems to be about.
please don't comment. I did not say leashes were illegal. I said those leashes which extend over 6 feet were not legal since the law says a leash/lead must be only 6 feet long....hench the intelligent conclusion that those that allow the leash/lead to go over 6 feet are illegal...it's not rocket science.

Then would not Petsmart, Petco, Walmart, etc in Sumter County who are selling extendable leashes, be selling illegal products?

Quite the contrary, if you are growing to throw this stuff out there, you better be in a position to back it up.

would you also suggest that because a car can exceed a speed limit dealers ought not be able to sell them?

I have no dog in this fight but it seems every thread devoted to pets seems to result in pet owners projecting umbrage on those who simply ask for courtesy and consideration.

Fred's OP is spot on. Too many dog owners decide a golf course is an outlet that allows them the freedom to ignore leavings., ignore leashes, etc come on Fred called out offenders and they didn't like it.

Personal Best Regards:

I am a respectful dog owner, I pick up after him and do not allow him to walk on to other peoples property. If I take him for a walk, I make sure he goes before we go on our merry way. Having said that, I totally agree with what Fred is saying. I own a non retractable leash so that I have control. The leashes that go way beyond the 6' are usually all over everyone/s lawns. As an example I have seen in my neighborhood a man walking 2 goldens on those leashes and the dogs were 1/2 way up the mans driveway on their lawn. People need to have respect for other peoples property. Many dogs bleach the grass and it is the homeowner that has to take care of it. A little respect & common sense goes a long way.

When you walk your dog pick up their dropping and bring them home! Don't leave them on top of the storm drain in the plastig bag so when it rains it winds up in the pond. If you walk them at the mail station bring the poop home don't put it in the trash can at the Post Office as they do break when people push their unwanted mail in the can then it stinks like Sh##! If you can't follow the simple rules ten don' t get a dog period!

I'll bet a lot of those who let their dogs poop anywhere...also wear their ball caps at the dinner table.

We have a couple of people in our neighborhood with extendable leashes, who let their dogs run up into people's yards - including ours, and pee all over the landscaping. They also leave little piles on our lawn. And no, not everybody wants your little precious sniffing their ankles while you are in a conversation 6 feet away, no matter how cute they are. So yes, thank you for this post, it was needed! And yes, we are dog owners who control and clean up after our dog.

Agree. The one making the questionable statements is the one responsible for backing it up.
