Default The Villages Library Renovations/Addition

An article in the daily sun said that it will cost 1.4 million. Essentially, it's a big room addition. What about it could possibly cost 1.4 million? They didn't have to buy any land.

Even if you imagine that each item cost $50,000 it wouldn't cost 1.4 million.

For example:

Concrete slab...........................$50,000.

Four walls (ea. costing 50)...........$200,000.

Roof.........................................$50,0 00.

Underground utilities...................$50,000.

Reconstruct parking......................$50,000.

Interior finishing...........................$50,000.

We're up to $450,000. Even if you double the price of everything above there's still a half million unaccounted for.

Lots of costs not being factored in such as permits, architectural designs, engineering designs to name a few. As Rubicon pointed out it probably includes interior furnishings. Based on the Rec center interiors 50k is a drop in the bucket for interior design and furnishings.

It is probably because everytime you ride by there, is no one working. I drove by yesterday morning around 10:00am not a soul here working.

Yep, you heard right that is a part of the Sumter County Library System.

What locations do you think are owned by TV?
Sumter County, FL - Official Website - Library Services

Then, TV is not doing or paying for renovations. Correct?

The only TV library that I know of being renovated is the Belvedere library.

What library are we talking about?

It would be nice if you were more explicit in your opening post.

Default It's the Villages Public Library @ Belvedere

Sorry I wasn't more explicit. It's the Villages Library on the corner of Parr Dr. and Belvedere. It's across from The Villages High School.

Something just happened today to confirm my suspicion that the price of construction is out of line. There was an article in the Daily Sun stating that the city of Fruitland Park is preparing to expand. They don't have a bid yet but they expect to spend $572,700 for a total of 5,000 square feet. This will consist of two separate wings with a central courtyard. This will be more complex to build because there will be twice as many walls, two separate slabs, two roofs etc..

The Villages Public Library expansion can't be more than 3,000 square feet.

So we are talking $114.54 per square foot for Fruitland Park and $468.00 per square foot for The Villages Library. A huge difference!!!!!

if you go to any property that is owned by the villages it is furnished some of the best highest quality most expensive furnishings available. this is not some low-budget government operation this is of the highest quality look the best and the cleaning is outstandingthere's never an ounce of dust all of these properties are something they would have been there homes it's beautiful! this is a great comparison to what life would be like if the Morrises pulled out just compare the two libraries.

This has nothing to do with furnishings. The cost of the Villages Library expansion came from county records. The building department doesn't keep track of the cost of furnishings. It's about construction.

If you ever visited the Villages Library you would know that there were no overly expensive features about it. The exterior was designed to look pretty much like a nice house with a front porch. Very nice but certainly not overly expensive. And the interior was basically very plain. So this new addition will match what was already there, as far as quality goes. That means nothing out of the ordinary.

I've been to the Fruitland Park Library and it's a very nice library, totally on par with the Belvedere Library. I don't see how anyone can justify the Belvedere library costing roughly 4 times more per square foot.

You might give the reporter a call and ask where they obtained the $ info for the article.
Information on Sumter County site. Appears original bid requests was 1 million. I could not find where the project was approved.
Here are a couple documents:

Appears that Sumter County is paying for the project. Unsure about any TV involvement.
