Default Warning: American Institute for Cancer Research

The American Institute for Cancer Research is once again sending out mailings to Villages Residents about the Institute's "Villages Area Neighborhood Campaign". Warning: this so-called "charity" spends virtually everything it collects on fundraising and administrative expenses. The Institute has a zero stars rating (exceptionally poor) from Charity Navigator (charitynavigator.org).

My wife is a breast-cancer survivor, and it frosts me when an organization like The American Institute for Cancer Research diverts donations that would otherwise go to legitimate cancer-fighting organizations.

They inundated us with phone calls so many times that we started blocking the number. Next day or two, it started again with a different number, so we blocked that one also. Few days of peace and it started again. We wound up blocking 5 numbers from them.

We had a long discussion with my mom about checking out any charities she thinks she will support to make sure the bulk of the money goes to the people/causes it professes to help. She, like others, always assumes people and organizations are honest. Can't be certain of that anymore when it comes to these solicitations.

Thank you so much for this info. Everyone should check Charity Navigator before you or your church or your group give to a charity.

The State of Florida, Division of Consumer Services, operates a web site and 800 phone line for charitable contributions. You can find out if a charity is even registered to solicit contributions in this state and, if they are, what percent of each dollar goes to administrative overhead, fundraising, and the actual charitable recipient. The link for that site is https://csapp.800helpfla.com/cspubli...versquery.aspx.
