We weren't here then - but our good firends that introduced to TV had just moved in. Mallory CC was heavily damaged. I also know that a home on the corner of Canal and Odell-across the street from the Virginia #1 green - was also terrible damaged.

Mallory Square, north of O'Dell was hit the hardest.

Also damage done to Poinciana, Sunset Ridge at Sunset Pointe, Sabal Chase and Caroline.

That same path today would also have hit St Charles and perhaps parts of Tamarind Grove and Buttonwood. They were watermelon fields and open space at the time.

A day/event I hope to never see repeated here.

In Mallory CC there are pictures on the wall next to the pizza oven area. They show the CC after the tornado went through.

Where do you go with a tornado on the way?????? With no basements...wood houses... No shelters that would take all of us....if one ever really comes thru here there will more dead bodies than there are golf carts!!! Gotta hope mother nature spares this area!!! We are defenseless!!

The Village of Poinciana hit at 3:10 - 3:11 AM

The Village of Sunset Point & Eagle Preserve hit at 3:11 - 3:12 AM

The Village of Sabal Chase hit at 3:12 - 3:13 AM

The Village of Mallory Square hit at 3:13 - 3:14 AM

The Village of Caroline hit at 3:14 - 3:15 AM


The Village of Mallory Square seemed to be hit the hardest with many homes on Lynchburg Loop as well as other streets in that area being totally distroyed.

Mallory Hill Country Club and Coconut Cove Recreation Center were totally rebuilt.

There were no fatalities in The Villages.

My husbands retired boss was hit in Mallory, they had just moved in. There was no time for a warning....husband threw her in the closet just in time! It occurred while they were in bed sleeping. The house was damaged but they were ok. All was rebuilt to their satisfaction and in a timely manner too.

You do the same thing in Florida that tens of thousands of people in Tornado Alley and other parts of the world do in the event of a tornado and you are without basements or shelters; "...avoid windows; go to the lowest floor, small center room (like a bathroom or closet), under a stairwell, or in an interior hallway with no windows. Crouch as low as possible to the floor, facing down; and cover your head with your hands. A bath tub may offer a shell of partial protection. Even in an interior room, you should cover yourself with some sort of thick padding (mattress, blankets, etc.), to protect against falling debris in case the roof and ceiling fail."
There are certain things you should have planned out with your family members as a precaution in the event of any disaster.

Note that there were no deaths in TV. IIRC, there were no serious injuries either. So, the "wood houses" did a pretty good job of protecting the occupants. I have a friend whose CBS house was badly damaged as well. No injuries. The advice above is correct. We have supplies in an interior room with no windows or attic access door just in case.

However, as the tornado left TV it struck mobile homes in Lady Lake and other communities, where there were a number of fatalities.

The fact that the tornado struck in the middle of the night, that over 50 Villages homes were completely destroyed, and that there were no fatalities, was simply miraculous.

The force is unbelievable. Our friends in Sunset Pointe had their windows blown out and considerable other damage. A roofing shingle was propelled through the window over their front door, flew across the entire length of the house losing only a few inches of altitude, then embedding itself in the far wall.

As I recall, the developer had a large crew out at 5AM. All houses, that needed them, had blue tarps on them by evening. Debris was cleaned up as well.

Our house took about $100K in damage. The Villages (aka "The Developer") did a spectacular job in getting us back on our feet within a day or two, although I was a little dismayed that 2 houses had green tarps rather than the standard blue.

After the experience of Hurricane Andrew in Miami we thought it would be years before normalcy would be returned; thanks to The Villages, it was only about 6 months for those hardest hit.

I agree it was Mallory. It came right down our street (Timmonsville Way). We were there at the time, a night we will never forget. There was no time to react, just instinct telling you to head for the closet. Everything that was outside came inside when the windows imploded and it was over before you had time to think. The best of The Villages displayed itself once again as the caring neighbors were out in force checking on everyone. The developer drafted army of workers and trucks that appeared at day break to help. Another reason why this is such a special place.

Bottom line, this is what defines The Villages. When people are quick to criticize the Morse family, think about how quickly they came to the aid of the tornado victims and many organizations over the years.
