Not sure I understand this BUT, it reads 175 mph winds.

On other threads people have debated on my house can take 120 mph or I THINK the newest homes are SUPPOSED to take 150 mph. I don't think any of the homes are designed for 175. We have a newer one.

Wife asked at big cyress rec center and they will be CLOSED. I just got back from EISENHOWER rec center
and they will be closed.

There are four places SCHOOLS listed as SHELTERS. Simple terms, we seem to be SCREWED. YOU SIMPLY CANNOT DRIVE IN 175 MPH WINDS AND IN ANY CASE THE ROADS WILL BE FULL OF DOWNED TREES.

For what it is worth. Having been through lesser hurricanes, we were hit hard by SANDY, they chatter about the eye of the storm. Actually, based on our EXPERIENCE, the eye of the storm is quiet and peaceful. Do not get fooled, you will soon be back in the storm.

That 170 mph speed on the weather underground site refers to the wind speed very near the center of the hurricane. The model weather underground shows the hurricane out over the Atlantic when it gets up to the latitude of The Villages.

It hard tell from the image on the weather underground site, but it looks like the center of Irma will be about 100 miles away when it passes by The Villages. There still will be high winds, maybe even 100 mph, but not 170, in the Villages.

And there are a lot of different models being used to predict the track of the hurricane. The National Hurricane Center site shows only about a 10% chance of winds greater than 74mph in the Villages.

But all this can change with the next run of the models. It still to early to determine with any precision what Irma is going to do.

The weather reporting....any of them....and the media, all of them....are somewhat misleading by dwelling on the maximum wind speeds and not educating the public that the maximum speeds are for direct hits of the eye only.

But that would take some of the drama away from the reporting.

Tune into the weather channel. They do a reasonable job with a lot of detail. Lower right hand corner showing wind speeds/rainfall/surge potential of selected cities. Most of the coastal and near coastal cities present were all sub 100 mph winds...most 75-80 with max of 12 inches of rain.....

because they were west of the eye of the storm.

If the eye of the storm follows the east coast TV will be 70-100 miles from the eye!!

No intention in the above to minimize the extreme dangers coming with this storm.....none!
Only a perspective hopefully.

If you are staying as we are, hunker down and be safe.

I'm not one to typically defend the media, but with respect to hurricane reporting, I think most do a reasonably good job. After all, for most living near the storm, it is a very dramatic event.
