Default Wegmans

On CBS Sunday Morning today there was a segment on Wegmans. For those of us that are super fans, the interviews with Danny Wegman, Chairman, Colleen Wegman, President and CEO and Nicole Wegman SVP was depressing. They were very clear they are not heading south or west but will continue to expand in the Northeast. They do not want to be a National Company or expand beyond their ability to visit each store yearly.

We used to go to Wegmans when we lived in Northern Virginia. Our daughter still lives near Wegmans and says it has gone downhill.

Recently opened one on Long Island. Too expensive for me. Waited 2 years for it to be built and very disappointed.

Used to go to their parties on Canandaigua lake.

Opening in VA was a big move for them.

Wegman's is okay. It's certainly no Gelson's.

We lived a five minute drive from a Gelson’s and rarely shopped there (also Pavillions which was about 15 minutes from us). They were both pricier than we were willing to spend except on rare occasion. Five minutes down the road from Gelson’s was a Ralph’s and Trader Joe’s in one shopping center, which was behind our neighborhood so just a five minute walk. Those two were our go-to markets. We especially miss having TJ’s that close.

We have zero experience with Wegman’s having come from SoCal, but it sounds nice.

We shopped Wegmans for many years when we lived in Corning, NY. My only beef was that they slowly replaced name brand items with their store brand items. It was hit or miss on whether their quality was as good as the name brand. However, their service was excellent. What I really miss is the Purity Egg Nog which is much better than other brands. Homemade egg nog is still the best.

Default Not a Publix Again

Hopefully we don’t see another Publix built in the Villages. I’m sort of tired of “the company store” attitude about franchises here. Citizens First and Publix have enough outhouses for us all to use. A Traders, Ralph’s, Vons, Krogers, Acme or about any other franchise would be great to add to the Villages.

I know of Wegmans and it is a great store, but who cares about this story if they are not moving here! And who cares if you know them personally

Food & Wine ranked grocery stores recently via 40,000 participants. Wegmans ranked #4. Gelsons wasn't even in the top 10.
