That type of messaging especially is ALWAYS a fraud or scam. It's a common scam on Facebook. Once you respond or "like" or "friend" them, they start sending you innocent messages, laughing at your jokes, asking about the health of your kid after you'd posted they broke their leg, etc. They're data-mining you. They eventually determine that you have savings, or money, or assets, by seeing pictures of your house, or the jewelry you wear in the photos of your vacation cruise..etc. etc.

And eventually they let on that they're wealthy. And they became wealthy by [insert thing]. In fact, now that you two know each other pretty well, they'll let you in on it if you'd like. There are only a few spots available for this opportunity. You don't have to act right away but the deadline will be coming up soon.

They bring it up gradually, increasing the level of urgency until you cave in and invest. Then they come up with reasons why the investment isn't working as it should - and they'll need a little more to secure it solidly.

They'll keep doing this until you refuse. And then, they disappear. With your money.

What can I do to block friend requests in the first place? I get so many and it takes forever to delete them all.

What really gets me angry is all the “possible” friends that Facebook sends to me. I have traveled quite a bit and made a mistake of including my past locations on my page. NOW I get suggested friend from the Middle East, Africa, south and Central America, etc. Haven’t figured out how to get YouTube to stop being so friendly and “helpful”.

Probably mean the suggested friends Facebook lists. Yes it is a pain in the derrière and wastes a lot of time to delete

For Facebook, just install the FBP browser extension. You can customize what you see, what you don't see, how you see (or not) see, who gets what access, which notifications you get, which you don't get - you can filter posts containing words you don't like, or invite posts that contain words that you do like. You can set it up to get informed when anyone you've "friended" unfriends you, etc. etc.

FBP is always updating, because Facebook is always working to get around FBP's robust filtering system. So every few months you'll have a day or three when FBP isn't working the way you wanted it to. But it's pretty awesome. I see *NO* sponsored ads at all, ever.

I get a line of account names/photos across my screen as "suggested" friends. I just ignore it. Just don't accept any of them, or click on them.

Yes and you are very right to block these people. Usually there image is of someone in uniform, but the reality is its someone from extremely poor country sat in an internet cafe with many others who are trying to get money from people. There targets are usually women, and if they message enough they will get one that will except them, and there starts the 'online romance', followed by requests for money, and so many women have fallen for it.My friends daughter even, who is a different generation to us !He told her very quickly he had fallen in love with her, then came the requests for money, he said he wanted to see her as soon as possible and would she send him money for the airfare, and she did. And guess what the plane got cancelled! So then she sent him a second lot of money. My friend had to involved social services to get through to her daughter that it was just a scam, but it was hard going. She really thought someone loved her....Its very very sad.

Default Clarification

Just to be clear, the friend request I received was specific to this site. I’ve been on the internet for over 30 years so am pretty familiar with other social media sites.
It does however appear that others are appreciative of the expert advice that others have provided on generic friending.
Thanks for the PSA.

Thank you. Now I just need to figure out what the FBP extension is and where to get

Facebook is selling all your personal information anyway thats why they paid 100s of millions of dollars for their Spybook operation.
