What's the best new dishwasher and the best place to buy one? Ours is about to "kick the bucket". Is installation and removal of the old one included in the price? I hope so.

I would absolutely go with whirlpool stainless inside. Quiet as a mouse. Lowes has good pricing

Not sure which one is "the best one"...but keep in mind that many manufacturers are doing away with the drying element in the dishwashers. Supposedly dishes dry with the hot water (120 F degrees or hotter) and the use of rinsing solvent. Not sure how well that'll work...

I don't know in your area were to buy. However I would advise checking the decibel rating. All or most of the villages houses are an open concept and when I replace the dishwasher in my current home that also has an open concept it made a big difference in how much noise now it doesn't interfere with talking or watching TV. We got a Bosh but lots of brands have a low quieter model.

It doesn't. Especially if you have a stainless steel interior, which I will never have again after my experience with our LG up north. Plus your silverware will eventually rust or pockmark in a SS interior.

Well, Bonanza disagrees with me, and I would guess the poster above does too. But it is the experience we had with a high-end LG, and in my "research," (much Googling) learned I was not alone in the fact that the interior didn't dry thoroughly and that the SS set up some sort of reaction with the silverware, most of which is now made with inferior SS from third-world countries to keep the cost down.

I saved my allowance and replaced our silverware with Italian SS, and it did better.

I agree, check Consumer Reports. We replaced ours about a year ago with a Bosch, which I love because it's so quiet.

I think italian stainless means it was made from melted down Fiat bumpers. (Hey, I'm half Italian, give me a break.)

We have a top of the line Kenmore which is about 3 years old. We can't hear anything except the water trickling into it. There is stainless steel inside it. Have had no problem with our flatware. There is supposed to be a reaction between SS and silver that is not good for the silver.

CFrance -- you are correct. I disagree with you, albeit good naturedly!

A stainless interior really won't do a better or worse job than any other interior, although stainless will probably last a lot longer.. It's mainly -- the features of the dishwasher itself, the detergent you use, the cycle and options.

Personally, I am a Whirlpool aficionado. I love the fact that the silver basket is in the door (no other manufacturer has that) as opposed to taking up space in the lower rack. That is the only brand I have ever had and I've never had a problem. Here are some caveats and things that I do:

NEVER use liquid detergent! While it may do the job, it is very caustic on your silverware and dishes. Use either Cascade or Finish powder or tablets. Use Finish Jet Dry in the receptacle designed for that use because we do have hard water in this area. I only use all the economical options. I do not use the heat dry at all. When the dishwasher is done, I open the door slightly. The internal heat will dry your dishes with the door slightly ajar. Don't waste your money by using the heavy duty cycles unless your dishes have "baked on goodness!" My dishes, silverware and glassware are never spotted. I also casually rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

You don't have to buy the top of the line model of any brand, but I would not buy the builder model or low end model either. Look for the features that will serve you the best. You probably will use the same settings 95% of the time.

These are the points we agree on, esp. the Finish Power Ball. I did lots of googling on detergents too, esp. since they took the phosphates out of them.

But, my LG SS interior had to be left with the door ajar for a couple of days before it would completely dry inside. And I don't just mean the dishes. The walls also stayed wet.

I don't like having the door ajar. The DW is right under where I do most of my food prep. Having the door ajar gets in my way. In our Whirlpool with no SS we use Normal, High Temp Wash, Sani Rinse, Heated Dry. The dishes are squeaky clean, and we never get sick in this house.

In the '70s, we had a builder's model, very simple Kitchen Aid dishwasher. It was the best dishwasher we ever had. Our current Whirlpool (not Gold) is just as good. And I do like the fact that the silverware container is in the door, leaving more space for the dishes.
