I just got this email as a subscriber to The Village's VCDD. Please pass on this information to your neighbors in manufactured homes.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ============== In an effort to assist Villages residents who live in manufactured homes, The Villages community will open multiple hurricane shelters at 4 p.m. today. Emergency supplies have been requested from the state, but residents should plan to bring their own provisions just in case to the Villages Charter High Gym on CR466 and Paradise Recreation Center on Paradise Drive. Neither of these locations are pet-friendly. For a complete listing of shelters, please visit the link for your county below. There seems to be a real shortage of pet-friendly shelters to accommodate folks in the manufactured homes in the historical area unless I'm missing something. Have the churches opened as shelters? Can you imagine how scary this will be for the elderly who are alone with their pet when the winds start?

It is the high school that they made into a shelter...there and Paradise. Neither is "pet friendly".

If you've ever been to the high school gym that floor is beautiful. I Can't imagine what it would look like with maybe 100 or so dogs and cats running around inside. Few hotels allow pets either. Plan ahead an emergency could happen at any time. lo

Most people I know do not have pets. What is the basis for your statement?

Not everyone likes animals but I do, but I don't expect for the world to make allowances for my likes. We all make choices. If a person chooses a modular home or an apartment on the thirtieth floor or a home on the ocean or one on a cliff on one in a jungle, then there are pluses or minuses that come with those choices. We must be willing to accept the consequences for our choices and if one lives in a manufactured home we must realize that they are dangerous during a wind event. Many people have offered to shelter their friends in their homes during this hurricane. We have guests now at our home with their pet because they live near the ocean. I am not trying to be mean, just to point out that lack of planning on the part of some does not constitute an emergency or a responsibility for the rest of us. Many people can and do choose to help others but that is their choice.

Pets would have to be in carriers or cages and would be kept in a different area than the residents. And to your comment about the what the floor looks like?? Sure wouldn't want to postpone a couple basketball games to save residents beloved pets. To save possibly 100's of family pets, I am sure there are enough pet lovers in this community that would gladly fund a repair, and probably the developer would help.

Damned if they do and damned if they don't and some would find fault no matter what they did. Our lives and our animals are our own responsibility.
Only modular homes people would need shelter now, afterward is another issue. And would need other answers which I feel sure would meet with criticism no matter what it was. Some people are never happy and some people make no plans for anything and expect other people to solve their problems. I know I am grouchy because we are all stressed, but I get so tired of the blaming others for lack of things that should have been prepared for. Our children, our pets, our homes, our food, our money, are not other's responsibility. I am terrified that windows will break when the wind is high so we will have our cats in the closet with us in their carrier.

shelters are looking to house as many humans as possible. It could be looked at as for every 3 or 4 pet carriers is one less space for a human. if there is only so much space how do they choose, only pets below a certain size to accommodate more. Not an easy choice for anyone

Sadly, there are those who no longer have the cognitive ability to take responsibility for themselves or plan ahead. They didn't choose to be this way. |
