As far as the gates, this is the way it was when I moved here 14 years ago and I thought it was just fine back then and still fine now. It does slow traffic down and is some what a deterrent to the evil minded knowing that people at the gate saw them.
It does amaze me that when people moved here, everything was a-okay & they loved it. Now they are here and want everything thing to change.
Example.... A couple of friends used to say one of the reasons they moved here is because it was so beautiful with all the flowers. Now they complain and say the Villages doesn't need to change the flowers as much as they do.
Considering we have over 100,000 people, we live in a beautiful and pretty safe community.

Good Morning everyone.

it really gets old repeating that the gates are for traffic control....honestly if it is so distressing to you move to a 'security' gated community...do you also require guards and dogs??????

There are plenty of communities around here that are gated. The sales market is good here. Make a profit on your Villages house and find a truly gated community to make yourself happy.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I so agree. I've lived here 12 years and have always thought the gates needed to be removed. People want them for "traffic control"? That's pretty pricey- why not just throw down a few speed bumps throughout The Villages!! --who pays for the maintenance of the gates; who pays the salary of the Gate Box people?--Public roads should be maintained by the government, and if this is the case in Sumter County, then why should the whole county pay for just having gates in one community-let's install then on every road throughout the county? And if we in The Villages are paying for the Box People and the gates-why are we permitted/required to do this on a county/public road? They need to remove the worthless gates--Nuff Said, Rant Over.

Taking down the gates? No way!
Everyone seems to be in a perpetual hurry, can you imagine if there
weren't gates to slow people down?
And speed bumps are a nuisance and an eyesore.
Gates with cameras continue to be a good idea.

The gates definitely serve a purpose. And to the ones who are so adamantly opposed to them, the obvious question is...well...you know.

Well, I started this thread, and my questions were answered right at the threshold. I learned something I did not know and am grateful for the info.

I'm a bit concerned now (rainy day syndrome?) that the thread is soon going to run afoul of the January Civility Rule what with all the personal pronouns flying about and such.

I think it's time, and I respectfully ask that the thread be closed. The topic has been 'asked and answered.' Thank you.

I guess I feel a little different. Of course, I know not everything here is perfect, but to me, it's definitely pretty close to it.
Some people are getting really upset and angry over the gates and other things. I'm just wondering why people would move to a place that gets them so angry that I feel I'm being yelled at with all of the exclamation points and question marks on a quote of my post.

The speed bumps are a hinderance to large vehicles like fire trucks. So, fire departments try to veto them.

They hired more county police officers and more police cars to watch for those speeding golf carts and take more of your money...
