The fact that the OP asked shows that they do care, but does anyone really need a CDD rule to keep them from annoying their neighbor? You're not on the farm in Kansas any more. The houses here are close together.
Any unnecessary noise should be reason enough to have some consideration for those near you.
The daily dose of (necessary) leaf blowers and string trimmers is bad enough.

Unfortunately, some people do need a rule.

Our lots are too small to have wind chimes. We have a lot of breeze here and it would be constant. Nothing worse than watching tv on your lanai or taking a nap and hearing the distracting sound. Please don’t do it.

Cassieb 06-09-2025 06:36 AM

No noise is good noise.

Someone else should not have to listen to your noise. How about I play music loud enough for my neighbors to hear all day long. I may like it but my neighbors would soon get tired of it.

I take 24/7 wind chimes any day over abusing a pet left outside for hours at a time.

I assume he is not asking about barking dogs, but instead asking about wind chimes, because he has wind chimes and not barking dogs.

Not entirely sure, but I have a sneaking suspicion that is why he mentioned wind chimes and not barking dogs.

This is my first post, I couldn't keep quiet on this one since I have a Corinthian bell wind chime as well. I have gotten several coompliments of the tones. We live on the corner and the wind chime is in the back, there's a canal full of trees behind us and on other side of canal are patio villa houses, so the backs of their houses face the canal with no lanai. Even though I'm pretty sure they can't hear the chimes, when it gets very windy, I wrap them up and during thunderstorms (hurricane like storms), I bring them in.

opinionist 06-09-2025 06:51 AM

I like wind chimes in a light breeze. In a strong wind, they make an annoying continuous noise. The homes are close together, so the neighbors could complain unless you only put them up for short periods.

Obviously, wind chimes that you cannot hear are fine. But, the ones that you can hear are not fine. My experience is that wind chime noise travels a lot further than some people think. The fact that some people like wind chimes has nothing to do with the issue. There are a lot of people who hate them.

merrymini 06-09-2025 07:06 AM

I believe in some districts they are not allowed. Please follow the restrictions in your district. These are tight quarters and should dictate some consideration for your neighbors.

As a long time resident the homes are built within earshot of your neighbors, the constant clang of wind chimes will make you a pariah to your close neighbors. Rethink this plan.

Are you sure? Post No. 33 says that Districts 13, 14, and 15 prohibit wind chimes that are used as lawn ornaments, but this is pretty much worthless because it does not prevent someone from hanging a wind chime under an eave or in a screened lanai. Can you post a link for any rule that specifically prohibits wind chimes?

Rwirish 06-09-2025 07:17 AM

Leave them north. Why irritate people?

bowlingal 06-09-2025 07:22 AM

bring it! Then decide if you want to keep it up. At least you have the option.

La lamy 06-09-2025 07:38 AM

I'm glad you are asking, hopefully it leads to your being considerate of your neighbours' preference. I think all noise making things shouldn't be allowed. Peace!!!

Dotneko 06-09-2025 07:42 AM

Please dont hang them where your neighbors can hear them. They are annoying as heck - I dont care if they are hand made, artistic masterpieces. Take them inside your house where you get to enjoy them.

Boomer 06-09-2025 08:00 AM

The fact that you asked, and used the word etiquette, indicates you have nice manners.

Btw, when I saw this thread, I immediately thought of "Body Heat," one of my favorite movies. Wind chimes are effectively used in the soundtrack. . .

"Body Heat" (1981) stars Kathleen Turner, William Hurt, and Richard Crenna. Set in Florida.

Turner's character, Matty, says to William Hurt, a lawyer, "You're not too smart are you. I like that in a man." (She is right. She knows he is not thinking with his head.)

I digress, but anyway, don't hang up the wind chimes.

Boomer

Lottoguy 06-09-2025 08:10 AM

Wind chimes and barking dogs are the same. Very few people would want a neighbor who has either.

Lillypoo 06-09-2025 08:26 AM

Windchimes

Our neighbor has windchimes and feeds birds less than 10 ft from our lanai. We have asked her to please put them on side of her yard. So rude so irritating and inconsiderate. We got squirrel in attic and there was food she was putting out. Plus holes on top of our birdcage from squirrel climbing up to eat food she puts out. Mist neighbors awesome some really inconsiderate. The windchimes give is headaches. She keeps her windows closed so I doubt she even hears her windchimes.

plheide 06-09-2025 08:55 AM

Windchimes

Hang them as a decoration INDOORS near a window so you can continue to enjoy them.

Nell57 06-09-2025 09:06 AM

You have No neighbors on the side with the walking trail and No neighbors directly behind you.
There’s a good chance you can find a spot where you enjoy it and it doesn’t bother anyone else.
Corinthian chimes are expensive and have a pleasant melody compared to cheap wind chimes. I’d bring them along and give it a try.

I assume that you do not live near a walking trail and that there are homes directly behind your house.

People who hate wind chimes don't care how pleasant the melody is, they still hate them.

Yep. The problem is they make noise. You could use them inside though, turn on your fan.

loreejl 06-09-2025 10:57 AM

We also brought our wind chimes with us. Within 2 weeks our neighbor nicely informed us they did not care for them. We took them down!!!!!

No sound pollution. Stay within your borders. Loud motorcycles are music to the loud mouth.

Can I suggest a water fountain instead?

That’s a big ‘ditto’ from me. I know it’s a personal choice but I find folks either love them or absolutely hate them.
We find them beyond annoying (especially on a breezy evening when trying to enjoy our lanai).

terramuggus 06-09-2025 01:16 PM

You answered your own question. I would never put wind chimes outside. Homes in The Villages are too close and the wind carries. Why would you want to start off your new life irritating neighbors? That’s just me….

wanttoknow 06-09-2025 01:26 PM

absolutely agree.

For the record, it depends upon in which District one resides. The Architectural Review Manual for Districts 13, 14, & 15 has this: “The following is intended as a partial list of lawn ornaments: any man made statute or figure, wind chimes, plastic or silk flowers, windmill, pinwheels, train sets, deer, geese, flamingos or any other animal or human figures.”

I thought I'd read something about windchimes not allowed. I'm in District 13!

That only prohibits wind chimes that are used as lawn ornaments. It doesn't prohibit hanging a wind chime under an eave or inside of a screened lanai. So, it basically doesn't prohibit wind chimes.

SeanInFlorida 06-10-2025 05:34 AM

In the grand scheme of life you certainly can live without your wind chimes. Please don't do that to your neighbors. In the TV almost every day there is a breeze, so it would be nonstop noise. This is very different here with houses very very close together.
I am sure you could still be happy without them. A lot of people are very sensitive to constant noise and you could very literally ruin someone's life here in TV. Donate them to goodwill before you move.

I think it's nice of you to ask! To me it depends on the wind chimes themselves, and your neighbors. Asking your NEAR neighbors if they're bothered by the chimes may be a good way to meet them, but be prepared for an answer you may not like, or expect. As for me, I like 'em.

BeachYia 06-10-2025 05:59 AM

Corinthian chimes are so soothing

I love the sound of Corinthian wind chimes. I don't like the metal ones that are constantly "tinging" . Corinthian chimes are like being in a spa. I would bring them and see how they work out. You can ask your neighbor, after you have had them up for a while. I believe they will love them. You should take them down when it gets really windy for their protection!

Rainger99 06-10-2025 06:40 AM

You can listen to them here.

Corinthian Bells Wind Chimes

Would you want to hear it every time you walked into your lanai?

No.

Mikee1 06-10-2025 07:01 AM

The way way the start of this post is worded tends to make one think you feel you are special. When you buy a house you do not accept an offer, you make one and it is accepted or not. The way you state this, it says you feel you did someone a favor by accepting their offer to you to buy their house, typically unsolicited.
Now, in case you are not aware, wind chimes are not sound directional. They will not only be heard by your ears but everyone else's within the same range. So what you are asking is can I annoy my neighbors with my wind chimes??
Please reconsider your desire to live within Grey Poupon range of your neighbors. You should always consider your actions and their impact on others.
Please ponder all of this, then make your decision.
