Default Re: HOME SECURITY SYSTEMS

We have just installed a "Lasershield" system available at Circuit City or lasershield.com.
It is a monitored system (by lasershield) and seems to be well constructed and executed.

The system relies on strategically placed motion detectors around the house. The basic system comes with one control unit and a motion detector unit. More detectors are available at $59 ea. Basic system is around $175, monthly monitoring is $19.95.

It requires a "wired" phone line to operate dependably although our's has been working with Vonage OK. The company does not guarantee service with VOIP providers such as Vonage, however. There is a option you can get for connection thru internet which is the way I would go before getting into the expense of a wired line if you don't have it. There is also a cel-phone option if you want choose that route.

The system seems to work well and can be set to ignore small pets, etc..

Negatives:

1) Detector units a rather large and conspicuous, not desirable if everyday aesthetics are an issue for you.

2) At the moment, the system is motion detector only. No perimeter switches or fire detection systems available. This means someone must be IN your house to trip the system. You can use a PANIC button from anywhere in the house.

BTW the sales rep for the product lives in FL and his number is on the box. He is VERY helpful getting the system set up and will provide you with some promotional goodies if you give him a call. We got an extra detector and some signs.

The system is super easy to setup online and is active as soon as you are finished.

While I was fiddling around after the setup I set the system off and didn't enter the proper response code when the call center responded and we had a visit from the sheriff about 5 minutes later. I was a little embarrassed and my wife accused me of testing the response but he was very nice about it. (AND it proved the whole process worked).

The nice thing about this system is it is portable, doesn't require extensive, expensive install, and is inexpensive to purchase and maintain.

Another REAL plus is you don't have to have a high pressure sales type come and sell you stuff you don't want or need!!!

captain1202,
Thanks for the info. I appreciate your full description of the product and costs. Hopefully we will sell our present home in the near future and have the opportunity to purchase a new home in TV.
