I've seen several houses here in the Villages that have Solar Panels on the roofs. With our hot sunny days, this area seems like the perfect place to have solar panels. Can any of you let us know any information you have learned about having these, such as the initial cost, installation cost, recommended brands and installers, and the energy savings??? TIA!

I would also like to know if the solar attic fans are a good investment.

After paying north of $500 to heat my pool for the month of March, I'll be installing solar panels to heat the pool in September. The way I calculate, they'll pay for themselves in less than two years.
Be careful on the type of panels you're considering. The company that is most commonly seen selling panels in The Villages uses panels that are "solid". They are prone to wind damage. Even worse, moisture collects between the panels and the roof causing rapid deterioration of the underlying shingles and dry rot of the roof boards. The kind to consider are those with individual tubes where the wind can easily blow thru the panels. Call Jack's Solar (352-267-4903) to get a demo and cost estimate.
