Default Car Registration

We are in the final stages of pulling the trigger on buying a home in TV. Have had a great winter here (6 month rental) and thank everyone for their hospitality and friendship...
As we move to the next step, I'm wondering about the cost of registering a car - how much does it cost, etc. Our cars are over 6 months old, so we won't have to pay the 6% sales tax, but I'm still not clear on registration costs. I know that it will be around $35 for state registration, but are their county/town fees to be paid each year as well?

We're from NH where the state gets you and then the town gets you for registration.

Many thanks
Suz

Pay attention to the initial registration fee, title fee, license plate fee, etc. which I believe are in addition to the annual license fee.

Sue,

A great place to get lots of info on utilities, vehicles, closing stuff, etc. is (courtesy of Zcaveman) in the Nuts and Bolts section of this forum. Scroll all the way down from the main forum page and you should find it...

Good luck,

k

Default Car Registration

Many thanks everyone for the links and info... doesn't look as though it will cost us as much to get our cars on the road in Florida as it does in NH.. after the initial fees are covered...

From Nutz & Bolts of The Villages post:

"LICENSES AND REGISTRATION

Florida Drivers License
As mentioned above, be sure to bring your birth certificates and other ID with you. You will need them to get a Florida driver's licenses* As of October 1, 2008, you must present proof of Social Security number (for example, a Social Security card or any of the following documents showing your Social Security number: tax return, W-2 form, property tax statement, pay check, DD-214, school record).

You will get a vision test when you transfer your driver's license to Florida. This site has all you need to know about getting a Florida Driver license and registering your automobiles in Florida. http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/ Look under Tags and Titles and New to Florida.

Florida Automobile Registration.* You will need your automobile titles. If you are still buying your car, bring the name and address of the car loan place and the account number. You will have to have proof of Florida car insurance before you can change titles and get tags. I stayed with my original company but they had to write me a new policy and cancel the New Jersey one. This site has all you need to know about getting a Florida Driver's license and registering your automobiles in Florida. http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/* Look under Tags and Titles and New to Florida."

When I got Fla plates for the car we leave here a few years ago:

Title transfer required proof of Fla issued insurance, Fla issued insurance required Fla Drivers License (the carrier would issue the insurance provided you gave them proof of the Fla DL within 90 days).

The title transfer and Fla plates on an older car was around $100; I have read a couple months ago that it is now about $400.

We registered our truck last summer and it was about 18 mos old and the cost was about $196.00 for some reason the truck was cheaper than if we had a car.

I just got an itemized quote from the tax collection person in their office across from Walmart on 441. For one car, license, tax, mailing, etc was $412.40 plus 54.25 for an 8 year license.

A friend of mine came down from New York in December 2010. To register his van and car it was $800.00. To get his/hers drivers license it was just under $200.00. So your looking at about a grand for two cars and license.
