Drove into Marathon on 466A yesterday around 2:30. Gas pumps crowded. Go towards the door and a scribbled sigh says closed. Should I assume no one showed up or someone had an emergency?

That's a sign that's being passed around the retail businesses for some time now,

OP, If the location was actually closed for business the gas pumps would have been turned off
and no one would be pumping gas

it may have changed but you can get gas at some of these stations after closing
