Default Change your locks cheaply

I called the locksmith and he wanted $69 to make a trip to the house and around $15 to change the lock.

Instead, I went to Lowe's and brought a brand new entry knob for the front door for $27.97 and installed it in about 10 minutes.

Also, before you buy anything, check prices at Target and Walmart.

We are loving it here in the Villages. It is very safe, but you never know how many workmen have a key to your house. And if you bought an older home, keys could be in the hands of relatives, neighbors, workmen and friends!

Good advice, Bob. And you're right. It is an easy fix!

Our locks came with a silver key and info how to rekey, you need a key (we used our key from our up north home) follow directions and lock change complete.

The new houses come with a smart lock and the Contractor changes it the day you meet with him so that only the original key will work. You get the keys and the instructions on how to change the lock yourself.

Is that only with new homes? Or only with homes sold through TV? Or with any home in TV?

....which would be for "free", based on the assumption the house already has user rekeyable locks installed. Many houses won't have those.
