We are planning on moving down soon. House here in va. Goes on market end of July. Have heard lakeside property not selling. We will see. Anyway. Two years ago we had a severe winter storm and lost power. So to be ready for the next big one we bought a generator. Now we don't know to take it with us or not. Does the villages ever lose power?

During hurricane season. Last time there were major statewide hurricane outages was 11 years ago (Charlie, Frances, Ivan, jeanne).

We have lost power only once for an hour or two in the 8 years we have lived here. There hasn't been much hurricane activity other than I can remember one tropical storm but our power did not go out. If I already had a generator I would probably bring it because you never know.

Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole counties all had massive outages in 2004. Most folks were without power for 5 days, many up to 2 and 3 weeks.

One of the great things about TV. Is that all power line are buried. This reduces the frequency of power outages. We have been here for 2years and have experienced an outage only once and it was for a very short time. If you feel you need a generator, you may want to consider a power wall. The technology is very new but makes sense. Google it and check it out.

I didn't think about underground lines. In our previous life we didn't have that advantage.

Ok, I will be the counterpoint. We come down 2-3 weeks a year (rent our house most of the time). We were down in may and the power went out for about 8 hours... temps were in the 90s... Bring the generator.

Yes, this was not weather related, it was a localized issue south of 466A, but why not bring the generator.

Thanks everyone for your input. Would like more. Our house here at Lake of the woods just went on the market, and true to form, the agent said waterfront property is not selling well. Well, that's us; buy high, sell low. I'm still buying green bananas.

kathygeorge - How about if the offer for your house is close enough to your asking price - you leave it as a bonus for the new owner - unless you have good friends to donate it to?

If I was ever to be in The Villages and was told we would lose power for even a couple of days I'd put some of the frozen water bottles from the freezer into the fridge; pack a bag; throw the main elec breaker and turn off the water; give my neighbor the key to the house and tell them to help themselves to anything in the fridge that had a chance to go bad and head to Disney or St. Augustine as a tourist!

Good luck on the sale of your home. We were fortunate to have bought in a high growth area north of Kansas City 3 years ago and was able to sell our home in a little over 2 months.

We bought a generator when we moved to Louisiana 15 years ago and used it many times there and also in St. Louis when we moved there. We never had to use it in KC. I start it up every couple of weeks just in case we every need it.

We have lost power for a couple hours due to a lightning strike close to a transformer. Our neighbor has a generator and he never considered breaking it out. Instead we all decided to go to the moves and out to dinner. By the time we got home everything was back and functioning.

I agree power loss is not frequent but if you have the generator I would tend to bring it.
If it is portable definitely bring.
If whole house consider how much it will cost to remove and install. If you are going to be here for 20 or 30 years you will probably get a couple of chances to use it.
