The water here is extremely hard. My veterinarian told me today that pets in The Villages should drink only filtered or distilled water.

ijusluvit - That is fine for drinking water, but showers and clothes washing in hard water won't change. We are going whole house and filter on the drinking water faucet.

Guess I didn't mention that we bought a resale with a water softener already there. It's nice, but not as important as the purifier for drinking water.

You can put in a whole house purifier, but that was the concern of the original post - it's a lot more costly than my solution.

So we are pretty much on the same page. We'll do a whole house softener and then filter the drinking water. We did a reverse osmosis system in our house in Ohio and we never felt like that was a wise choice for us. With a softener and a filter for drinking water, we'd have been OK. The RO system and a softener was overkill at that house.

Yes we learned a few days later that this is exactly a scam. This "team" of The Villages welcome lady, NOT! comes in and gives you a lot of cheap usless "gifts" and raves on about how great the water filtration is claming to have one and how much better it is than the regular water. Then the next day the salesman will come and try to convince you that your pipes are going to clog and that your health will be compromised if you do not buy one of their $5000 dollar systems
Don't let them through the door.

Installed a whole house filtration system 1 1/2 years ago. You will see the difference in 3 days. No water spots in the showers, use less soap in diswasher, washing machine. No soap residue on anything anymore. Yes a good system will run you money. You can have the benefit of better water, or spend your money elsewhere. Enjoy TV.

your question was "is it a good investment"

No, it is an expense, you will not recoup any investment.

It is expensive. TV water is a bit hard, it's not terrible.
Most people don't have water softeners and do just fine.

I thought about it, I chose no. I put in a kitchen sink carbon filter for drinking/cooking to take out the chlorine. I put one in the one shower we use for the same reason, the shower feels better sans chlorine. In the dishwasher, I toss in a bit of vinegar with the detergent, and all the other spouts are on their own. Does't seem a big deal.

Just bought a house in Pinellas and will be moving in May. What company did you use for your water softner/filter?

I don't know why this phony welcome woman is allowed to just knock on people's doors and try to get them to use the company's she is pushing?

We came from up north and where we lived the water tasted great. I have to say I'm not here to push any products but we had to have a water system installed here. Our water did not taste well , our clothes did'nt clean as good as they do now and we don't feel icky after showers and no water spots on glassware or dishware. I think it' a personal decision to buy a system based one's taste, sort of speak.

I knew before I moved to The Villages that I would have to install a whole-house water system because we had to have one when we lived in Ft. Lauderdale and I suspected it was the same all over Florida - harsh very hard water that tasted terrible. I have very dry skin and the difference between the hard water and the softened water is amazing. My skin is softer and not itchy, no spots on the shower door or the glasses from the dishwasher, laundry is cleaner and softer. I'm not saying that the tap water is not safe to drink because I don't know, but seeing the difference that it makes to skin and glass and clothing, I just wonder what it does to your insides.

Will be moving in May to Pinellas. I currently have a whole house water filtration system in my Louisiana home and want to install one in TV. May I ask what company you used for your water softener & in-line filter?

She isn't allowed. She isn't from "The Villages" as she says. She just knocks.

Beware of the knockers.
