Anyone know anything about plans to install wifi Villages Wide? A rhumor I heard.

I wish that were true, but I don't believe it would be cost effective and most folks would not give up their current high-speed internet to "pay" for Villages-wide WiFi. Not to get too technical, but Mesh Networks are expensive to install and maintain. Several large cities (Chicago, Boston, etc.) were on this path, but I believe they finally gave up.

Nice rumor, but if I were a betting man .....

I'm no networking or wifi expert, but couldn't there also be a security issue depending on exactly how the network access would/could be setup?

Yeah, I agree. I don't get why anyone would begrudge any business for making a profit. I have a family member that way, but they have never had anything their entire life, by their own doing, but they always are the first to criticize someone else for making a living.

The key word is a little profit,,,, past actions indicate that there idea reasonable and what is reasonable are two completely different things.... Just look at the $5 map they sell it has to cost pennies to produce after this extended time....I sure don't mean to cast shadow on your perceived utopia. As they said on dragnet.....just the facts please,,,that is my goal...

I get a free unsecured connection at my house in Pionciana called "lynsys". It's hit or miss

and pretty slow most times, and "half fast" others. Anyone know it's origin ? Being un-

Linksys is a wireless router that probably belongs to one of your closest neighbors. Usually these signals can't be picked up very far from the source. Most wireless network routers are password protected to prevent unauthorized use, but some owners don't bother to secure the connection with password protection.

for 3 weeks after the closing, but come Oct. I'll get connected for real.

Also, I've read on this forum that Comcast for $24.95/month is only 1.5 meg

and their 16 meg is $52.95. Century Link DSL "up to 10 meg" is $49.95/m.

Can someone confirm if these speeds and prices correct?

No perceived Utopia - I see the warts here.

But very unlikely that the map costs pennies - likely your perception not approaching fact. Cost of production (including color seps) for a full color document that size is more than pennies. Then add to that shipping, storage, disposal of the outdated maps, new neighborhoods added to the master, etc. I would guess there is about a 100% markup. And hey - no one says you have to buy it!

Comcast is 24.95 if you bundle with their TV cable service. Stand-alone internet is 34.95.

Century Link stand-alone is 49.95 after their promotion rate and is reportedly slower than Comcast. They also offer a price break if you bundle.

Add another 5.00 per month for either service if you don't have your own modem.
