Use the window a/c until your central a/c is up and running. Only an idiot would turn you in for that, and your main one will be fixed before anyone could do anything.

Have the Capacitor replaced every two or three years and keep an extra one in stock. Watch the guy replace it. It's not too hard if you are inclined to give it a shot in an emergency. Many people have batteries in the thermostat inside the house. These are two simple repairs you may wish to give a shot on your own in an emegency.

Not accurate. Some people have medical conditions and probably couldn't survive without A/C. Crank it up.

Just to add on here, a portable one is one that requires you to run a vent out to a window to vent outside.
These produce about 60% of their rated BTU as far as cooling is concerned. This is because the motor is inside, not hanging outside and rattling the neighborhood. This means if you do get a portable, get the largest one you can find that won't blow your breakers. A separate mini-split dehumidifier in your closed off lanai area can keep the house tolerable, but you would have to time travel back 6 months to get that installed for right now. Obviously, screened only porches need not apply. |

AC floor unit with tubing out the window.
Our AC went out first of week. Munn came to the house within an hour but did not have the part and had to be ordered. My husband bought an AC floor unit with tube that goes out the window from BJ's. It worked beautifully. Out AC is now fixed but thankful for the AC floor unit. Now using it on our lanai.

For an emergency I think you would be ok. I would ask if it is ok if the unit was inside your home and only exhausted air through your window with nothing outside the home. Since it is not visible from the outside I would think you do not need approval.

From District web page Q: Do I have to provide my name when submitting a complaint? A: Each of the District Boards determined that reporting potential violations will be an anonymous complaint system; except for District 5. District 7 only allows one complaint per day from an individual. Please keep in mind that the District is subject to public records law and if you provide an email address, your name, or your home address, staff would be required to disclose that information if requested. The best way to file an anonymous complaint is by telephone.
