Does anyone know how to get out of timeshare ownership??? I have owned a timeshare week in Florida for over 35 years and have tried many times to get rid of it without any luck. The maintenance is killing me and I have lost money each time I've tried to sell it. If anyone has any experiences they could share about their own timeshare I would appreciate it.....Thanks!

Can you rent it to cover the maintenance fees ?? we have a plantinum week at Grande Ocean in hilton head and thats what we do ....rental fees more than cover the maintenance expense.

Sell it on E bay. You no doubt will take a big loss but you will be out from under the maint. fees. Much depends on the timeshare company. If it is Hilton, Hyatt, Starwood, Sheraton, Marriott or other major hotel company you may get $4-$7,000 for it depending on the week and location. If it is a small private company you will get around $100.00 for it. I purchased a Hyatt week in Key West that Hyatt sells for $35,000 for $5,000 five years ago.

You can donate it. Just google timeshare donations. it shouldn't cost you anything.

If you donate it, be very carefull on how the transfer is going to take place, You dont want to be in a situatiuon where who "think" you donated something and yet 6 months later you are still responsible for the mantenance fees...the exact reason you were trying to get rid of the TS.

Just be careful - lots of scammers out there involved in timeshares and/or vacation clubs. You want to get rid of it - not get a second one! Red flag - if they want money "up front" to help you get rid of or "sell" your time share, run (don't walk) away from that deal. The timeshare market is in the crapper right now so you will be lucky if you can get rid of it and break even.

What rs the name of the resort, how much are you asking for it and what week is it? Also, what is the yearly maint fee?

I believe you would have a "lien" placed on the property and eventually can impact your credit score against you. If your property taxes are billed separately ( ie not included with your maintenance fees) and you dont pay them, that would be another lien. Down the road you could end up in foreclosure....Not a Good idea.

YOu say you have tried to sell this property before and you were going to lose money each time......In todays market, it is unlikely you would make any money in seling a timeshare. NOw if you bought this property 35 years ago, hopefully you did not pay $20 or $30,000 for it and you have gotten a good number of years of vacation at the property. (Just trying to find a good tread in a bad story) .

Have you tried going back to the manager of the property and simply asking them if they are buying or at a minimun, could you deed it back to them! They would use it as a rental property.

Have you heard of "Universal Timeshares SA"? The say they have a buyer for my property but want money up front (which I won't do).

We had one in Cancun and they changed the terms of the contract which were not acceptable to us. Bought it in 1995 and just quit paying the maintenance fees in 2002. They sent us bills for several years which we ignored. Haven't heard from them in several years. Contract was signed in Mexico. Don't know how they could take any legal action here.

This is a timeshare users group. It has links to various things to be aware of. As others stated, NEVER pay upfront to any company claiming to have a buyer waiting. This site also tells you how to donate your timeshare successfully and what to avoid. If you donate, you need to be sure the paperwork states that you are donating the timeshare and not just a particular year's week. I have bought and sold many timeshares and the one thing I will say is be VERY careful who you deal with. On TUG you can also look up what others are asking for, so you can get a good idea of how to price yours.Good luck !
