I was in Chicago this past weekend, drove through my "old" neighborhood where the street seemed smaller than when we played football between the cars, my grade school is being turned into expensive condos, my dad's factory (where I learned to work) is gone and apartments are there, the hot dog stand, corner candy store, neighborhood theater and ice cream parlor are all gone! So, thanks for the adding to my memories that recalled my fantastic, simpler childhood!

About 21 years ago I got to relive the experience of returning to my childhood home. I have lived in it since, right down the street from my first school. Wasa great feeling coming home. I haven't liked all the changes to the neighborhood but some folks would call that progress. Not me.

I remember all of those things. And not to be a wet blanket but I also remember that when the fire alarm went off, I was holding my breath until the pitch lowered. If it didn't lower that meant the bomb was dropped and to run home. We had a volunteer fire department.

So I wonder if we took more chances, played and prayed harder back then knowing that anyday may be our last and money, class or race would not save you. When I talk about chances, I mean jumping off high walls, jumping off swings, climbing trees that were way too high, exploring new places and throwing knives. That's what my friends did. Although at that age I always saw my family somehow surviving a nuclear bomb. My dad would have something up his sleeve.

I don't know if my parents were worried the entire time. I'll ask my sister when I see her [if I remember].

I went back home and in 40 years all the forests I use to hunt and explore as kid or teen have been bulldozed for corn fields. As I looked on google maps at least 75% of the land has been deforested throughout the Midwest. Pretty sad.
