Cutting cable

Yesterday (Monday), Xfinity was down in all of LaCrescenta Villas in Village of Santiago for over 5 hrs. Not the first time, but unusual.
We plan to partially cutbthe cord next month.
Out Xfinity bill keeps climbing. If you look closely, we're paying $80/mo for a lowly 100 mbps internet!
Thankfully, here on the north side of TV, fiber optic service is available through Quantum Fiber (was under CenturyLink) at $50/mo for 200 mbps or $70/mo for 900 mbps. We're going to go for the 200mbps to start and see if we get bogged down.
We are going to stream Xfinity, for the simple fact no one single streaming service provides all the channels we watch.
Our combined total monthly bill will be roughly 30% less.

Cannot blame xfinity to much for yesterday but bills have gotten out of hand.

Need to consider alternatives

Yesterday was the worst day with an estimated fix by 10:40 PM......maybe!!!!!!! Seems to be working this morning.....for now.

Fast approaching cutting the cord time as soon as a suitable alternative is found.

I know our neighborhood is affected....anybody else having current service interruptions?

Our internet, phone & TV were off for about 4 hours & all was well by 8PM. Happens rarely.

So it seems…
There was a system wide problem for the state of Florida. All of The Villages was out until around 7 pm last night.

I've been wondering why anybody would have a smart home system, by that I mean having the lights and thermostat and security system all Wi-Fi based. Additionally I have ezviz cameras on my home that I can access from my cell phone when I am up north, that is also Wi-Fi based. There was an Amazon product that will open your front door or garage door to allow the men to put deliveries inside, don't think that's a good idea either. I believe Comcast / Xfinity also offer cell phone access that competes with Verizon and the others. Who in there right mind would want a Wi-Fi based cell phone after us outage like this? I am rambling a bit here but it seems like a lot of these products can be extremely unreliable and dangerous.

Technical Question

How do you turn the power off on the modem without unplugging it. Is it that button on the front. I tried pulling one of the chords out yesterday to reboot. I couldn’t use my phone to look for instructions as it appears we didn’t get any with the modem. I quit trying after a neighbor said that xfinity appears to be having some issues throughout the state. Any reboot info would be greatly appreciated.

Mine went down around 3pm yesterday ...couldn't call them 'cos my landline phone was out too ...tried on my UK mobile (at great cost) to be told we are not answering due to a high volume of calls - Yeah Right !!
Jumped in my car and went to Xfinity Store on 441/Rolling Acres ...to find a mini riot ...dozens of people outside the store - the staff had locked the doors and would not speak to or let anyone in ...a cop showed up ..don't know what he was doing maybe just monitoring the situation ......lots of very angry people. !!!!

I'm a little confused by your post. You seem to argue against network-based security products yet you have your ezviz cameras. Are you saying you want to get rid of those cameras?

Internet problems happen, as do electrical problems and cell phone tower problems. I have had Xfinity for about two years now and this is the first outage that I can remember. Four (or seven or eight) hours of downtime out of at least 17,000 hours of uptime seems pretty good to me.

My home security systems continued to monitor my house even though they couldn't reach the internet. When I arrived back home I was able to check their status and history. When the xfinity problem was resolved they uploaded the information as normal. All my devices worked reliably during the outage, they just couldn't be accessed remotely.

Some people could not reach their smart thermostats. That doesn't mean their house went without air conditioning, it just meant they couldn't adjust the temperature while they were away. I couldn't adjust my temperature while I was away either; that's because I (along with many others) don't have smart thermostats. The difference between me and those with the smart thermostats is they eventually regained remote access that I still don't have.

Xfinity's mobile phone works over the Verizon network. It may have a preference for wi-fi when it is within range of an xfinity hotspot but otherwise it talks to the same network as your Verizon phone. My AT&T phone also connects to wi-fi when it is available - I simply disabled that feature yesterday.

The Xfinity app provided me the situation and estimated return to service time.

There are probably several different modems around so it's hard to say how to do this with the one that you have. Mine does not have a power button so the only way to remove power is to unplug it. Some modems have a battery backup installed. With these you would need to unplug it AND remove the battery.

I am able to login to my modem from my home network. From that interface I can press a Reset button. Not quite the same as unplugging but its easier to use and usually gets the job done. There should be instructions online for how to access the particular modem you have.

Consider Century Link over 8 years with them great service ,failed once because neighbors landscaper cut viler-optic cable.Fastest available $65.00.

you do know that smart phones also work when there no internet connection and can do everything that your computer does without it, to be fair it can loose all connections but you would have to be in some pretty remote places not to pick up some signal from unaffected areas

Yes, Refund possible

Historically, I have had success getting refunds from cable companies for extended outages. Yesterday it was out for four hours and, at a $100/month, I should get $0.55 back. Refunds usually only practical for multi-day outages.
