I can assure you if our Right to Bear Arms is revoked, those who would do evil will STILL be able to find a weapon when they want to commit a crime!

It would be impractical – not to say unethical – to randomly assign volunteers to carry a gun or not and see what happens. So Charles Branas's team at the University of Pennsylvania analysed 677 shootings over two-and-a-half years to discover whether victims were carrying at the time, and compared them to other Philly residents of similar age, sex and ethnicity. The team also accounted for other potentially confounding differences, such as the socioeconomic status of their neighbourhood.

Despite the US having the highest rate of firearms-related homicide in the industrialised world, the relationship between gun culture and violence is poorly understood. A recent study found that treating violence like an infectious disease led to a dramatic fall in shootings and killings.

Overall, Branas's study found that people who carried guns were 4.5 times as likely to be shot and 4.2 times as likely to get killed compared with unarmed citizens. When the team looked at shootings in which victims had a chance to defend themselves, their odds of getting shot were even higher.

While it may be that the type of people who carry firearms are simply more likely to get shot, it may be that guns give a sense of empowerment that causes carriers to overreact in tense situations, or encourages them to visit neighbourhoods they probably shouldn't, Branas speculates. Supporters of the Second Amendment shouldn't worry that the right to bear arms is under threat, however. "We don't have an answer as to whether guns are protective or perilous," Branas says. "This study is a beginning."

Daniel Webster, co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research in Baltimore, Maryland, thinks it is near-sighted to consider only the safety of gun owners and not their communities. "It affects others a heck of a lot more," he says.

Google Gun FActs 6.0 The study you mentioned is flawed, as most of those that were shot were gang members, not ordinary citizens. Flawed study, flawed information.

Carry a weapon?

I have guns to protect my home but, why would you carry when you are inside the bubble? TV is not New York, Philadelphia or other high crime area. I know people will say "outsiders" can come in but, have we had any instances? What are you going to do , shoot a Drunk or someone who cut you off while driving?:duck:

Took about 15 minutes. You should just call and set up an appointment. Got my concealed carry license in the mail 3 weeks later.

I am doing the same thing. Less hassle & I want to see Tampa. First appointment was 9/29 though.

It is far better to carry and not need than it is to need and not have.

But....carrying it around in TV? When you socialize, do you carry it? When drinking do you carry it? Under what circumstance in TV would you use it? What would threaten you enough here and cause you to use it? Do you tell friends at social gatherings that you are armed? Have you encountered a situation here in TV where you needed it?

I fully understand and believe in your "right" to carry it.....I just have a problem with you carrying it in a retirement community.

Obtaining the license means that you can carry, not that you must carry or will always carry.

You're certainly correct...unfortunately not everyone agrees. I've seen posts here by folks who DO carry in TV......just not the place for it....that's all I'm saying.

EdV 08-26-2012 12:53 PM

The original post and subject of this thread was a procedural question concerning obtaining photographs for a concealed carry permit. And this would not be the first time that the mere mention of a CCW license elicited off topic challenges about the need to carry in TV even though the original post contained no mention of the need or desire to do so.
