Default Getting Over the Air Channels

Here is hoping that one of you has some good experience with cable or antennas:

I don't have cable hooked up at home, however when I plug the cable into the back of our TV we get NBC perfectly but no other channels. So it seems to be that the over the air signal is good enough to bring in the digital channel.

When I flip through other channels I get several others (approx 25) that come in snowy, which doesn't make sense since digital channels either come in or they don't, since analog is no longer used I should not see snow.

My question is, short of just buying cable again, how do I make the channels come in clear? I have tried an indoor antenna with an amplifier. My tv is a digital ready 32" LCD so the tv should not be the issue.

I haven't had cable in 2 years so its not that big of a deal (currently we just use a roku and subscribe to hulu plus) but it would be nice to get other local channels and ESPN (one of the snowy, almost watchable channels) for sports.

Is your antenna specifically for digital? It has to be or won't work with the signals. Even an indoor digital antenna works great.

Yes, the antenna I just purchased is a digital antenna. I'm taking it back now since it didn't work (didn't even recognize the nbc channel I get without an antenna).
