Step back and take a breath. First of all churches are just buildings made of mortar and wood. You don't need to be in a building full of people who could potentially kill you with a virus they are carrying. You can read the Bible at home, you can pray at home, you can watch a service on your tv. You don't need to be in a church building. Think about the clergy and their families. Do they want to expose their families to this awful disease. We need to concur this disease and packing people into a building will only further the assault we are under. Second: Wal-Mart also provides not only food but has a pharmacy inside its' building which makes it an essential business. I have seen much smaller grocery stores still open, because again, they are essential. The stimulus package, when in finally arrives, will get the small business back on their feet. This type of setback happens whenever there is a disaster not just this virus. The real question is: How often do people make it a point to shop at only small retail stores? These small business will also get no interest loans to help get them up and running again. A well run small business if handled properly will have enough backup assets to hold them for a few months just in case. So yes, we do need Wal-Mart stores, Targets and the like. Third: Government doesn't always get it right because there are far to many cooks in the kitchen. Our governor could do a better job in not playing politics and getting what The Villages really needs, a huge testing site for all of our residents to have access to. Being a research site doesn't cut it.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790). The People make the decision not for the government to do. They have no right to close anything.

One person’s opinion, thankfully.

A tad out of context I would hazard?

“Those that trade freedom’s for safety will ultimately have neither.” “For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.

Just to be fair, perhaps if mediation didn’t take place as recommended by CDC and other health scientists, there could have been a million deaths. We don’t know how many but suffice it to say it undoubtedly would be unknown thousands more Americans that would have died. BTW, it ain’t over until it’s over. A Yankee philosopher said that.

THERE ARE TREATMENTS for the flu. THERE ARE VACCINES for the flu. Sorry to shout, but the snow must be clogging up your brain.

Huh?

I'm a conservative so I agree with everything Trump has done. Oh wait, I'm a liberal so I disagree with everything Trumps has done. Oh no wait, I'm libertarian so I haven't made up my mind yet. Let's face it, if we were Daytona Beach Spring Break Millennials we'd say let's party and forget about the old farts. But we're not so we actually care about the ugly potential consequences of contracting the virus considering the fact that we're more at risk. Does Trump, Shumer or Pelosi give a hoot about you and me? Not really. Trump has made decisions based on input from brilliant medical professionals like Fauci just so he can say it was on the advice of the best minds. Between that and blaming China and the WHO he'll most likely be re-elected. So, to the conversation at hand I agree with most of the closures, the social distancing, the stimulus, etc. It would not benefit us to close all stores. It would not benefit us to open all businesses. Even with what we're currently sacrificing we still have way more than any other country.

life or liberty? sorry, it's a no brainer

People are dying folks, thousands of human beings all over the world. Fact! The issue is what do we value more, money and personal freedom, or human lives. No brainer...

Not true. We actually need both. What good is living if there is no freedom. What good is living if the shelves are empty. Yes, people are dying. People died of H1N1 and life went on. It has to be restarted again.

If there are vaccines and treatments why are so many dying every year and yet we don't shut down the country

When this all over I think you will see the mortality rate of this virus will be close to sine flu, sars, and our annual flu with 40,000 to 60,000 not making it.

Power. Look at what is happening in our country. Money. Look at all the gifts, $100,000,000. to PBS and the Kennedy Center as an example. How does this help our people/country?

Dr Winston O Boogie jr 04-16-2020 10:23 AM

The reason that this virus hasn't spread like wild fire in this community is because so many of us are in very susceptible categories that we are following the governments guidelines.

It is sometimes in cases of emergency that some of our rights are suspended. It is up to our elected officials to make certain decisions. Just as it was right for Lincoln to suspend habeas corpus during the civil war, it is right for the government to close certain businesses and disallow certain activities for the duration of this war.

I and far from a big government guy, but I do believe that there are times, such as this, where the government needs to step in and do what is needed.

IMHO, I think that both our federal and state governments have done an exceptional job in dealing with this crisis.
