Rest in Peace coach. I know some have judged him harshly in recent weeks, but he did more for people whose lives he touched than most of us could do in 100 lifetimes. Could he have done more to have brought down Sandusky - probably - but he did what he thought he was supposed to do with the limited information he had at the time. Whatever his shortcomeings, his influence and good deeds will get him to the front of the line at the pearly gates.

I think the thing that makes me most ill is that a man's entire career, along with many others, and the reputation of a great school, have been tarnished by the actions of one very sick individual. Regardless of what everyone else did, Sandusky and his perverse actions are responsible for all of this. Should it have been handled differently? Of course! Should everyone involved have done everything possible to stop this? Of course! Is it sickening that one 'man's' depravity should ruin the lives of so, so many people and children? That goes without saying. It's sad that this man dies with this being his final memory. I hope Sandusky gets what is coming to him...if not here, he definitely will in the hereafter.

The article at tpop's link says the family refutes the claim of Paterno's passing.

Sounds like it's probably just a matter of time, though.

with both these posts.

Joe Pa should have done more and he has said those words himself in his recount of what took place. He claims it is his biggest regret. He did a lot of good works but his last days were saddened by this tradegy perpertrated by Jerry Sandusky.

The report I read was obvioisly premature and I apologize for jumping the gun. Hopefully God will allow him to make a miraculous recovery and give him a few more good years. At any rate, it seems obvious that the turmoil around the Sandusky affair hastened the rate of his deterioration. What an absolutely monstrous affair this whole thing has become.

Talk is cheap. He could have done lots more. He knew Sandusky was a horrible pedophile yet continued to interact with him...all in the name of big money football. Paterno should have gone to the cops, the press, anyone that would listen, to ensure that no more children suffered at the barbaric hands and ***** of Sandusky. AS for Sandusky, killing is to good for him. To all those that knew and covered up for him..your shame should know no limits.

Where is the proof he "knew Sandusky was a horrible pedophile"? McQueary admitted to the Grand Jury that he didn't tell Paterno the details of what he saw out of respect for his coach. Paterno took what he knew to his superiors and they are the ones who chose not to take it to the police. Big money football? While Penn State is big-time, Paterno was one of the lowest paid coaches in Division I, while donating much of his income back to the university to build a library among other things. Oh well, CBS just reported on his passing so all the holier than thou people can rest peacefully knowing this monster is off the streets. Rest in Peace Coach, they didn't allow you to do so the last couple months of your life.

Everyone has an opinion on this and various topics. We ask comments be directed at the topic and not a user. At the end of the day we can agree to disagree on subjects. Enjoy!

He died of lung cancer. He died of being old. I am sure he was very depressed toward the end. I feel bad that his last few weeks on this earth had to be carrying around the problem about Jerry Sandusky. The sad thing is that problems and decisions hound us all of the way to the grave, and no matter how many right things we do, the wrong decisions are there to haunt us, no matter how great we become in the eyes of men.

He tried like most of us always to do the right thing, and like all of us sometimes failed. He was a great coach and educator and a moral man.
