In Valdosta GA, we stayed many times at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown. Not on top of a highway and there was a nice staff, light filled lobby and it was clean. This is not a recent recommendation so maybe check tripadvisor.com or other sites to verify.

Just in the last couple of years, I've become a fan of Holiday Inn Express.
Most are new facilities and HIE have been very consistent in quality and cleanliness.
