They have been around for quite a while but only the burglars knew about them. Check out this video from CBS news. You need more than that dead bolt when you go to bed at night!

Recently we locked ourselves out of our house in Charlotte below 466A. Called a locksmith and when he came to the house he told us our locks were not pickable. They are security locks. He had to drill it out and then I had to go to Lowes and get a new one. There is a small slot where you put a tool and you are able to rekey the new lock to the old key. We did it and it worked great.

MikeV,
Was that the original lock supplied with your house, or a replacement lock?

I can only say the locksmith told me it was not pickable.

According to my favorite locksmith, the new locks are totally unpickable (at least for now). So, all locks south of 466A have the new locks, ditto St. James. At least some of the locks for Pennecamp, Tamarind Grove and Buttonwood have the new locks, but not sure if they all do. I don't think any of the villages between Morse and BV have the newer locks, nor Amelia or Hadley, but I could be wrong.
One easy way to tell if you have the newer locks is if you got the kit to rekey with your home. If so, your house is pretty much unpickable (but can still be easily kicked in and we won't discuss the sliders, will we?).

You don't need to pick a lock when you can kick the door in! I still recommend Tri-bolts, which makes the door unkickable-inable. I know that's not a word...

Is a Try-bolt a type of lock or do you mean three bolts on the door?

You have the window pane on the side of the door. All someone has to do is break it and open the lock from the inside.

It has a shaft that goes up into the frame if installed at the top, or down into the threshold if at the bottom, so yes, it's a type of lock, but no key. You can see them at Entrypoint on Bichara. they come in all the colors needed to match your door's hardware. Or click on the link I gave above.

We lived in two places in MI, for a total of 25 years, that had solid glass front doors with deadbolts. Somewhere along the line you just have to decide what's enough to have you feel safe. Ours falls short of owning guns, but we take many precautions and leave the rest up to fate.
