I have a medium size safety deposit box at Truist & just received a form letter stating that my renewal rate will be $175/year! Maybe I'm getting old, but that sounds silly expensive to me. I don't keep a lot of money in my account there, just whatever I need to pay bills for a few months. Anyway, I'd be curious to hear what others are paying at other banks/credit unions.

We have a pretty small one at Vystar costs about $ 25 per year.

My wife used to work at First Va which after several mergers became Truists, still have stock, so glad to see they are charging so much and making me money.

We bought a small Sentry floor safe for our home. Big enough to store our valuables and important documents, readily accessible to our heirs, too heavy and bulky to be carried away.

We don't have one here, though back home we did. It was free because of the amount of business we did with that particular bank, otherwise $22 per year.

We have a 5"×10"×20" box at Citizens First that I think was around $100 +/-.

It is small, heavy and bulky. One hired mover was cockily confident he could pick it up and carry it to the truck. I thought he might. He needed equipment.

One question is why do you need one. If it is to hold your will and other estate papers I would go to a fire prof safe in the home. Be sure family knows where the papers are and the combination. I leave mine unlocked. In the past I had problems getting into a deceased persons bank box even though I was listed on the box. Was told this is a common problem for the bank.

I agree. For legal papers, scan them and store them on a hard drive and/or in the cloud. For valuables like jewelry, what good are they if they are locked away in a safe deposit box?

However, it is a good place for drug dealers and tax evaders to hide cash from the IRS.
