150 years ago during the three day battle of Gettysburg. Today is the mid point, with Pickett's charge and the end of the battle being tomorrow.
If you have never been to Gettysburg and have a chance to go, go. I found distant relatives that died there. Although I am from Ohio the family came from Pa. 3 generations ago. My distant cousin was found on the Pennsylvania memorial. |

According to Wikipedia, 7,863 died. That is from both sides. They were all Americans regardless of the color of the uniform.

I have family from both the north and the south, including both yankee and confederate soldiers. One of my yankee aunts saved newspapers from the time as well as letters from family soldiers. When I sit down and read them it is like being there.

And yet, not as horrific as Antietam, which to this day is the bloodiest battle ever fought by Americans. I don't know why, but one of the things about Gettysburg that I find interesting is that the South approached Gettysburg from the North, and the North approached from the south. The bravery of all was extraordinary, but the actions of Lieutenant Chamberlain on Little Round Top stand out, and was a key to the battle which makes it key to the outcome of the war.
