Default Disc Golf

Has anyone had the opportunity to play disc golf? I played yesterday at Pine Oaks in Ocala and it was fun. Some people call it Frisbee Golf. I would love to see a Disc Golf course put here - I'll bet it would catch on. Google search disc golf and there are also videos on youtube. I loved it! Where would someone make a suggestion for a course in The Villages?

I have heard of disc golf. I discovered this 40+ year old sport from a friend of mine two years ago. We have been playing together for the past 2 years. I live in northern NJ and have played approximately 15 different courses within a 75 mile radius of my home town of Parsippany. I certainly am not a great player. My average score on an 18-hole par 3 course is 75 and can still flaunt with low 80's on occasion especially if the course is long or extremely challenging. I throw primarily forehand as I have not been able to maintain much accuracy with my backhand.

Your post caught my eye because my wife and I are considering retiring to The Villages in a few years. One of my concerns is the ability to continue to play disc golf in locales nearby. So I am glad to hear there is one in Ocala.

I think it is a great idea to suggest that The Villages put in a disc golf course. I agree that it will catch on. If I do decide to move there I certainly will get involved in achieving this. I am currently assisting my friend with getting a course put in in Rockland County, NY where I grew up.

Where in the Villages would there be enough land to lay out a course?

We came down here from CT - our sons are avid Disc Golfers and have played at a course in Apopka/Ocoee. You really don't need a great deal of room for a course, nor do you need cleared land. Many courses in the Northeast are in wooded areas and/or built in public parks. I think that the first step to building one here would be to find out how many "DG"ers there are in the area. One resource would be the PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association) website - it is quite extensive and has lots of info. PM me if you have any questions - I'd be happy to try to answer them...

The university where I was working before retirement has one along a back road on campus. It basically runs down both the sides of the right of way. It is wooded on each side of the road. The students and others use it often. Easy for just about anyone.

Disc Golf is a great sport. I install and design disc golf courses for camps and in 2011 put in 2 nine hole courses at Warren Willis Camp just a few miles from you in Fruitland Park. This past january, I installed a 9 hole course across the lake at Lake Yale Baptist Conference center. I bet if you called them, they might let you come by sometime to look at the course and even play it. I have sent stuff to the rec. staff at the Villages in the past about Disc Golf but never heard anything back. My father in law was a resident there for many years until his passing early this year. DG uses unused portions of property. A mixture of wooded and open areas is cool. The DisCatcher Pro-28 targets are the best around and highly visible (yellow tops). They would go nuts at the Villages if they had a disc golf course. And the cool thing is, they can put it in a underdeveloped area of property and then easily move it when new construction comes in.

Default Any updates on Disc Golf

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQrqTK9bYhI]Disc Golf Live #57 pt 1: Worlds 2013 Grandmasters and Sr. Grandmasters + Copenhagen Open - YouTube[/ame]

Before asking myself, I searched for old threads on Disc Golf, a booming sport here in the Midwest. Wife and I will be looking at TV soon (Preview) and wondering is they have DG yet at TV.

Video above is low key and just shows how fun it is. It takes about 1/3 (or less) the size of a normal golf course.

If anyone has any updates for DG in TV, would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is a DG course at the Okahumpka park on 44 (6085 E SR 44), not far from Brownwood.

Oh, and they recently added a smallish dog park.

I see. Thank you for that information.

I guess DG is not big at TV. Does anyone play disc sports at all? Ultimate?

I started a separate thread just recently asing about frisbee/disc in TV. Not much reply yet, but I'm still hoping.
