Default US Officials speaking off the record

"...said U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly."

I see this so often in the press. Why are they speaking to the press about things they are not authorized to speak about? OUR US officials breaking the rules of their employment. But, sadly, it shouldn't surprise me, our officials are above following rules and laws.

EDIT: I thought I would feel better after posting this, but I don't.

JB:

The amount of quotes attributed to someone "not authorized to comment" has been bothering me for several years.

I doubt that there's anything we can do about it, other than to blindly blame "The Media." Upon whom, frankly, I think much can be blamed!

They are trying to outscoop each other. Some are more concientious than others.

It is business, and in a real sense it is competitive business and has lost a lot of ethics, but we stay up all night and watch.

Eager to know..ready to believe.

I am tired of Fox and MSNBC and like CNN better but they reported the bombers were arrested in error.

It is a sad state of affairs...I just hate the politics attached on the networks and on this forum.

I try to sort things out for myself. And I have a little dab from this side and a little dab from that side. Nobody agrees with my politics.

I think we reveal too much about inside info when we do things. By doing so we give away our process to gather data and capture people. All this info gets processed and the next time someone will remember what was said and then try to avoid getting caught.

WE telivise the whole story on what is going on and if a criminal could monitor it they could move around to get out of the way to avoid capture.

FOX is so boring..........CNN constantly "jumps the gun" and also repeats itself but it is true they are just trying to get the news out there and be first and foremost............we watch all of them (except FOX...only occasionally to see perhaps a different spin on things)..........but CBS with Scott Pelley, evening news, up here at 7 p.m. is a solid news half hour.
We also watch a half hour of ABC with either Diane Sawyer or David Muir.

Combining all of the above........plus getting all our breaking news on our computer screens from MSN..........plus read a lot of newspapers from all over the country.........we form our own opinions.

keep in mind many times the "off the record" remarks are specifically planned/planted/intended means of getting a controversial message out to the public..........planned and calculated leakage!!

Unfortunately, it would probably be worth waiting 2 - 3 days after an incident to actually watch/read the news. MAYBE by then they would have the facts straight.
