You know, Silent Observer tipping has been around for decades--with rewards for leading to arrest and conviction. I simply don't see how this is any different than what we've been doing all along. You know of someone possessing a gun illegally... they are committing a crime, and you have a right to turn them inn for your own protection and that of others.

Do your law-abiding rights trump his/her criminal's rights? Who's invading whose privacy? There has to be a level of providing safety to the public, and that may at time involve invading some criminal's privacy.

What is your point? The hotline is for the entire state of New York.

To me, tiplines to the police are good things. If a no-good-nik is taken off the streets, it is always a good thing.

If you knew that your next door neighbor had committed a felony (eg. hit and run that killed a person), wouldn't you call the police and give the tip to get him arrested? I know I would!

Well, let's break that down. Possession of a firearm illegally. Which is likely a felony. Which is likely to make them a criminal.

What was the problem again?

Many communities have a hotline for certain crimes with a small reward it it leads to an arrest.

I think it is a great idea.

I don't live in NY.... but you want to know how many people that I know that I could call in an report.... Zip! I make it a point to avoid people and situations like that... at least if I know it.

Most people that illegally possess firearms do not advertise it... except to their victims, the people they threaten, or fellow criminals.... possibly the family members of those people... including the criminal.

But, oh my!...Wouldn't that be an invasion of privacy? See how ludicrous it all is.

I was just reading a story on Yahoo News that reported two teens in Brunswick, Georgia, had been arrested in the killing of a baby during a robbery of the baby's mother. It appears the arrests were made based on a police tipline that offered a reward.

Do the posters who feel that tiplines are an invasion of privacy (somehow?) feel it was wrong to arrest the suspects who supposedly killed a baby in cold blood during a robbery?

Amazing.... and Sad. What happened to common sense?

Rhetoric (often outright distortion) is an effective tool to manipulate people... Some seem to thrive on it as if it is a source of legitimate information that embodies critical thought.

Some of the consumers of it weave together several lines of disconnected rhetoric into even more imaginative conspiracies.
