Val Kilmer, gone at age 65.

Mercurial as they come but still, a great talent. Looking back at his all-too-short acting career, he had some incredible performances. He seemed to have a talent for becoming the person he was portraying, a la Daniel Day-Lewis. Not a lot of actors seem to have that talent: John Wayne for example always came across as an actor playing John Wayne playing a part. But anyone who saw his performance in The Doors could see that. He WAS Jim Morrison. We don't know how close to the "original" his performance as Doc Holliday was in Tombstone, but I like to think that the real Doc Holliday, were he still alive, would have heartily approved of Morrison's performance.

Looking back, one of his best performances was the tongue-in-cheek deadpan role he played as a secret agent in Top Secret. Overloaded with college freshman - type humor, maybe, but still fun to watch. And who can forget Iceman in Top Gun, later reprised 30 years later as Admiral Kazansky in Top Gun - Maverick, in a role with very few words but played with a lot of emotion.

He left us too early. But he left us a lot.

The real Doc Holiday might have seen Val Kilmer's performance. No one really knows what happens after we die. I had a friend who was a fellow Philosophy Major at the University of Nevada, Reno in the late 1970s and early 1980s. An angry and jealous husband had took issue when my friend tried to pick his wife up in a Reno or Sparks bar. My friend so upset the husband that the husband stabbed him about 5 or 6 times in the back. He was flat lining for four minutes and lost a lot of his memories because of it. But said he had seen nothing that he could remember during those four minutes. He was still picking up married ladies though the last I saw him.

But it seems like others have come back with some kind of memories about where they went.

So. Who knows what happens? Val Kilmer could be among us.

On a side note-- the jury in the attempted murder case against the jealous husband held he was justified in the attack. Or, something like that.

I was talking about my Philosophy Major friend on a Facebook page for people who lived in Reno, Nevada in the 1960s and 1970s and up popped his ex-wife who said he is still going strong. This was probably around 2013 or later.


I had gone to see Raiders of the Lost Ark with him and was extremely nervous when the man with the sword confronted Indiana Jones but he was ecstatic when Indiana took out his pistol and shot the man.

His ex-wife had a few tales.
