Just got a call from the BREAST CANCER SOCIETY. After probing it turned out the call was actually from ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY SERVICES from Southfield MI. I spoke with Richard Cole, brother of Evan Cole (the alleged owner) who informed me that 20% of donations make it to BREAST CANCER SOCIETY of Mesa AZ. When I asked what percentage of the 20% actually make it to the end user for chemo and pain meds he didn't know.
Now let's explore what the Breast Cancer Society Of Mesa does with their 20%. According to the person I spoke to 75% goes to their warehouse program where they give products that were DONATED to the people in need. I'm assuming that since the products were donated the 75% is going for warehouse space and other costs associated with running a warehouse. So there you have it, if you were to donate $1000, 800 goes to the Cole family of Southfield MI, $200 goes to the Breast Cancer Society, $150 goes to run a warehouse giving donated cleaning products. Mr. Cole finished up his call with me saying he hopes he never calls me again. DUH? Y'THINK RICHARD?

To solicit as or for a charity in Florida, that charity must be registered with the Florida Depart of Agriculture, Division of Consumer Services. You can look up any charity at https://csapp.800helpfla.com/cspubli...versquery.aspx. This will give you the registration number of any charity licensed to solicit in Florida as well as three numbers. Those numbers are the percent of your contribution going to "overhead costs of the charity", the percentage of your contribution go to "solicitation efforts" (in some cases this is the percent paid to a company that does phone solicitations for a charity - how much they keep), and the percentage of your contribution that gets to the actual charitable recipient. Check it out before you give. Don't give at all unless they are registered in Florida.

Great job to both you Patty, and Bryan for the information you provided regarding charitable donations.

The problem described in this thread is rampant. I have run numerous local(in Maryland) campaigns(as a volunteer) for UW, a Food Bank,a College and others. In all of those cases they programs of the charity netted 87-98% of the proceeds, after deduction of ALL campaign expenses. There are many "for profit organizations "who are in business to solicit funds by telephone and mail for charities. Police and Fire organizations are some of the most frequent users of this method. When these" for profit" groups are involved, the charity often nets as little as 10% of the total contribution.
If you get a solicitation call , ask if the caller is a volunteer, if there is a hesitation or if there is a long story or a "no" think carefully about your support of the charity. Generally , I find that camapigns run by local UWs , Service clubs, Salvation Army, Free Clinics, Hospitals etc . are very careful about expenses, run and managed by people we know, and the funds go for the intended causes, (unless they get lazy and hire solicitation firms) |

Because of the rampart deception I have sworn off any and all charities and/or campaign contributions. Even the so called legit take a big cut. Beside which most never seem to publish the results of their successes or how much and where they invested donations or campaign funding. charity begins at home

I swore off most "charities" after the Casey Anthony family fiasco. Prior to that I tried to be generous. Now I give to local food banks.

When I get a call that wants me to contribute, I always tell them that I never will contribute to any charity by phone unless I am the one making the call. That being said, usually the caller will hang up. There are so many worthy charities out there and here locally to contribute to. Please be careful and before you contribute, google the one that you are thinking about contributing to, you should be able to find out what percentage of every dollar you give actually makes it to where you think you are giving to. You will be simply amazed that in most cases less than half actually is used for the purpose intended. Some of the police charities are the biggest scams out there. It is your money and you should be able to give to a charity that is trustworthy. JMHO.

Thank you to all!
This is surely an eye opener. A shame because it spoils the generous American giving spirit. There are good charities out there to which we give ( red cross, leukemia/ lymphoma society, drs w/o borders, our church, salv army, food banks, CARE, etc) The day we learn any of these are getting " lazy' and hiring others to do the elbow work, we simply will stop giving to that organization. |
