Default Ladies Close Your Blinds

We never keep the blinds closed in the back of our house due to our yard being surrounded by shrubs and privacy fencing. I felt safe because of it. Wrong, and that was my first mistake.

Tonight I was sitting on the bed watching the Olympics and when I stood up and turned around I saw a man looking in the window. I shouted out to Tom call 911 there was a man looking in the window. When the cops arrived we went into the backyard and sure enough the gate was wide open and we never leave it open. The cops looked around with their flashlights and asked a few questions then proceeded to tell us there is a peeping Tom in the area.

I can't begin to tell you what a creepy feeling this is to know someone has been peeping in at me and wonder how long this has been going on. Every blind in this house is now closed and will remain that way until we leave this house in September headed to TV. I will never feel safe here again.

I want to clarify this did not happen in The Villages but this could happen anywhere. Ladies please be careful and never let your guard down like I did.

Exactly the reason we don't want Trash Thieves pilfering through our trash in the driveway. (See the enabling going on in the thread on that subject.)

Too close for comfort.

BIG mistake....you should have left the room quietly and called 911
By alerting the perp, you enabled him to get away before the cops
arrived. Too bad!

This DID NOT happen in The Villages!

I think the OP should have started her posting by stating that as an opener and said where it happened.

Naturally, everyone should take normal precautions no matter where they live.

In the spirit of inclusiveness-- Gentlemen close your blinds. There may be cougars on the prowl.

Yes, you are right. One thinks about what they would do when things like this happen but you really don't know how you will react until it happens. It scared me half to death and I over reacted and should have remained calm. I am still shaken up over it. At the time I thought someone was trying to break into the house.

Buggyone I clearly stated this did not happen in TV.

Common sense would say close your blinds at night. Mayberry doesn't exist.

We don't always notice what particular forum posts are made in, but your original post was made in the "Non-Villages" forum, and that sufficiently covered you on your front end and on your rear end! The Villages Florida

Funny you should mention that as there is a lock on the gate that we use to be diligent about keeping locked when our dogs were alive. After they passed we started slacking and not locking it. This incident proves one can never let their guard down. I can assure you its locked now and will remain that way.

The world has changed? There have been peeping tom's since...........

The term comes from Lady Godiva's infamous ride through the streets of Coventry in England. Unclothed with only her long hair to cover her, she made the ride as a protest to the oppressive taxation of the townspeople by her husband, Leofric III, lord of Coventry.

Before her ride, Lady Godiva asked the townspeople to stay inside with their shutters and doors closed so they wouldn't see her in the nude. According to legend, one man, a tailor named Tom, bore a hole in his shutters to catch a glimpse of Godiva as she passed. The tailor, who became known as Peeping Tom, was struck blind (or some say dead) the moment he saw her.

It can happen in TV, as anywhere else. I have a neighbor whose grown son visits, and I have seen him several times come home from between some houses very early in the morning hours. I don't know where he goes or what he does, but it is safe to assume it isn't good. We get up very early and sit in our lanai to drink coffee in the dark to watch the sun come up, and that is how we discovered this.

The Sheriff's Office came and talked to him about it, said he was a very weird guy, and told him not to do that anymore or he'd go to jail. Haven't seen him do that again, but we aren't up all night, so who knows?

Blinds closed at night, doors locked, motion lights on.

Since we are in The Villages it might be safe to assume you could be struck blind looking in a lot of peoples windows.
