Default Scripps Spelling Bee May 29-30, 2008

I do not think I could spell a lot of the words in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee going on today. http://www.spellingbee.com/

Our grandson was first runner up in Cincinnati three years ago and just missed going to the national contest.

It is neat. AND lucky too.

We have some VERY intelligent friends, both young and old who have a common condition called dyslexia. They reverse letters in words and really have difficulty reading and spelling. As I said before, they are brilliant. I notice that a lot of people here in the forum, including me, who always use spell check, misspell words.

It is nice to spell correctly, but not a character fault if you don't.

Did you see that the winner was asked to spell a word in the preliminary round and he thought he heard (it did sound like it) 'numbnut'? He was embarrassed to spell it and asked for a repeat. Fortunately the announcer defined it and the contestant said "Oh, numdah". Very calm young man!

As far as spell check goes - I try to use it for every post but sometimes we all use words that are spelled correctly but misused such as "their", "there" or "too" and "to". Spell check also has some faults. The following word is misspelled but for some reason passes the test: "televesion". Go figure!
