White visiting my dad this weekend, there was an article in his local Dubuue, Iowa newspaper about people in the Dubuque area who have had their DNA tested to determine their ancestry.
My dad is quite interested in genealogy, and he thought about getting one of the tests. I am mildly interested in genealogy, but I do not have a burning desire to find out what percentage is what from my ancestry. I have a friend who is African American who had her DNA tested a few months ago. She was surprised to find she has about 15% Scotch-Irish ancestry. Has anyone on TOTV had their DNA tested for ancestry? Any surprises in what the test results were?

I've had mine done. Nothing really shocking about my heritage because I had no idea. I'm adopted and did mine as part of a search for blood relatives.

I used Familytreedna.com for mine. Happy with the results. Other than Ancestry.com there is also 23andme gene testing.

Granddaughter gifted me an ancestry test for Christmas. I didn't send it in for a couple of months because I was under the weather....but I have still not heard anything.
I think I will buy one for my husband as well, even though on his side someone has traced things back to the seventeen hundreds. I find it so interesting. But of course, we can't ever lose sight of the fact that each day is a brand new day to make of whatever we want.

After my former spouse had one done which resulted in some big surprises - not necessarily good or bad, just surprises - I had one done. Mine had no surprises and came out very much as I expected as I knew my family history well.

Is the DNA testing more of an is-like comparison i.e. yours is like all these others and here is what we know about them VS specific familial derivations?

I had mine done because I was curious about health traits and genetics. I used 23 And Me about 12 years ago and still log in every so often to see new health reports and fill out surveys. It's been very interesting! They identified a couple of genetic diseases I know I have and have been more right than not about other traits.
I gave my dad a subscription as a gift and yes Maury, he is the father. My ancestry turned out to be pretty much what I'd been told it was by my parents -- half Italian, quarter Finnish, quarter Welsh. I'm not particularly interested in genealogy but have almost 3K genetic relatives in 23 And Me including two second cousins. No idea how big a database it is, but it was surprising to have so many matches. I get emails every so often from people trying to pin down their connection to me, but I know very little about my ancestry beyond my grandparents so am never any help. There are privacy concerns of course, but I've had a lot of fun with it. |

Had mine done last year. I had always been told by family that I was at least half american indian. The DNA test said I was mostly Irish and no american indian! I don't know as a fact but heard that ancestry.com had a special for $59 on line. I paid $99 for mine. Not sure where to find that deal but worth a search.

I thought that I was 50% Italian and 50% Polish. There were disparities with my background and my brothers. I used 23 and Me which said I was 18.1% Italian and 12.5% Eastern European/Polish. My brother used
MyHeritage DNA and showed he was 6.4% Italian and 31.5% Eastern European. Go figure. ![]() |
