It is an honorable game where you call penalties on yourself even if no one is watching. Golfers like Jack Nicholas and Phil Mickelson and Arnold Palmer are popular for their golf but also are known for being good guys and a family men. Tiger falls into the same category. We've watched him since he was two years old swinging a golf club on TV. We've read about how Earl Woods groomed Tiger to be a golfer and instilled good values in him. Earl intimidated that Tiger was capable of much more than just golf, perhaps even political office.

Tiger Woods has always been perceived by the public to be a model athlete and person of good morals, certainly a hero to many young people. How many athletes do we see in other sports that have something akin to The Tiger Woods Foundation? And interestingly, the Tiger Woods Foundation calls itself a "nationwide character development program". As such, Tiger's dalliances with trashy women have struck a nerve with the public. If he was an ordinary guy we would all leave him and his wife alone and hope they could work it out, but his celebrity status will obviously make him a target of public discussion and scrutiny. You can't get paid millions in advertising endorsement dollars to have your name plastered on all sorts of products, and expect the public to ignore you. The money comes with a certain responsibility.

Beautifully thought out and well written. I cannot agree more with every word you say.

Taj,

I hear you ...but a couple of points to ponder. First Russ had a great post on how many "opportunities" must come Tiger's way. That doesn't excuse him, but...

We will never know if Jack or Arnie had any sideline romances - the press in their heyday was not the 24/7 paparazzi driven gossip-driven medium then that it is today. Even Phil doesn't garner 10% of the media scutiny that Tiger does.

And I really take exception to the "trashy women" descriptive. Maybe she made a mistake too. Why does the woman always bear the majority of the responsibility?

It is definitely not funny to his wife and his sweet little kids are gonna read about it one of these days.

Back in my neighborhood when someone messed up the answer was, If you burn your butt you sit on the blister.

I gotta hand it to him. He owned it. Now what he does with the rest of his life is his to choose.

I would guess that particularly in this community of people who have lived several decades that most of us have made some big mistakes and lots of little ones. It's what we do after that that is the measure of a man....or a woman.

Wow! - I love it.....

Great quote!! Although I do believe once you make a commitment you need to stick with it, it probably is very difficult to have women throwing themselves at you constantly. Wish I had that kind of problem. :D

Here is another quote ... "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".

I'm sure that Tiger's wife has had her share of opportunities. She is gorgeous. I sincerely doubt Tiger would appreciate his wife's infidelity.

Wow all the things in this world that we need to worry about, and Tiger is the Main issue. A couple of things have come from this.
a. Tiger is human afterall....
b. Now that Kathi Belich from Channel 9 has worn the Casey Anthony Story to hell and back, she now has someone else to spend all day on breaking news with.

Like Jason Taylor of the Dolphins said, Its his d*#@ Business. Not Ours.

Calling someone trashy by no means implies she bears the majority of the responsibility. In fact my post said specifically my opinion about Tiger's responsibiliyy. And I call anyone who knowingly fools around with a married man, especially one who has 2 young children, trashy. Just my opinion.

As far as your statement regarding "opportunities that come Tiger's way, but....", its true -if you're a celebrity, you will have tons of gold digger type women throwing themselves at you. It comes with the territory. In my book that doesn't make it okay to cheat on your wife with professional party girls. Again, my opinion.

Taj - I never meant to allude that opportunity made cheating OK.

And calling someone trashy greatly oversimplifies the situation... because what we don't know is if this was a mistake made once or a few tims with the same person - or a pattern of irresponsible behavior.

To err is human.... As Gracie has said, the true test of a person is how it gets dealt with going forward...

The woman said she was with him 20 times. I think that speaks for itself.

Which woman? Now there are two that are in the picture if you read today's Orlando Sentinel.

And why does 20 times make her trashy? Maybe Tiger told her she was the one and is leading her on. Maybe the sex is great and that is why they keep getting together.

GMONEY 12-03-2009 01:28 PM

maybe, just maybe and that is strecthing it, you cant believe all you read.. esp... the National enquire and all those other trash papers. Hell i could say i slept with Palin and have Proof and make up a bunch of things, she will the be put the ringer and didnt even get a chance to say a word.

set back and relax, not the end of the world...

Thank you Z!

And why do we always feel betrayed by a celebrity who slips along the road of life? As Bare said, if we all could practice the golden rule in all aspects of pur lives, we would be better for it.

But, we are human....

Nope... not the end of THE world.... but certainly the end of Elin's and Tiger's world as they previously knew it. Pretty darn sad.

Russ_Boston 12-03-2009 04:24 PM

Good points Kate.

Also in my discussions with some older friends at work today they mentioned how Arnie's rep isn't really that clean. I don't know if they were referring to anything moral like fidelity or other things but there is a felling that reporters used to cover for him. The point is that like Kate mentioned we will never know due to the lack of 'social' reporters back then compared to now.

I don't look up to any golfer based on what kind of 'man' he is. I like Tiger and Phil and... because of their games. I wish I had their games - not their morals.
