Has anyone ever seen any of the Viera master planned communities on the east coast? They seem to be off I-95 from Cocoa Beach (on the mainland) down.....across from the Banana River....and to the west of Atlantic Ocean.

We were just reading about the tragic accident involving a little two year old girl whose legs were cut off when she slipped while running and slid under her dad's riding lawnmower in Palm Bay Florida. We couldn't remember where Palm Bay was........so I looked it up and my husband was correct, it's near Melbourne,Florida not far from where we lived in Satellite Beach , Florida. Anyway, checked out Palm Bay and nice website came up.

One thing led to another and we came across another master planned community with sports complex(baseball, etc.) which seems to be for all ages.

Funny, but we have never heard of it at all......anyone been there???

Seems that a lot of the homes are built around either manmade lakes or real lakes.......the first house we saw had the pool and birdcage coming right out to the lake...........the prices were comparable to TV....but didn't mention anything about golf cart paths, and I saw no golf cart garages.

Lots of churches, schools, shopping, etc...........just wondering if anyone saw that area? Thanks in advance. VIERA in Slovac language means FAITH. Name of family who developed it is Duda.....and they were of Slovac ethnicity. It appears to have lots of horses and cattle ranches too.

We have friends that live in Viera. It does not compare to TV. No golf cart access to the commercial areas and many of the residents are not Retirees. Viera is a planned community----I do not know if any of it is a Community Development District but I do know that where our friends live in Viera is NOT a CDD. It is close to the beaches----a plus for those who love the beach.

Just wondering if anyone had ever been there or heard of Viera......as we had not. Never heard of it mentioned nor read anything about it.

One other place we had heard of, but never visited, was Ave Maria which is inland from Naples. A few years back I checked out their website, but it never seemed to offer much.........

As my husband said, Florida has so many planned communities that never do amount to much........The Villages was beautiful and has everything any retired person could wish for.

I have another home in Melbourne, near Viera. Viera is nothing like The Villages. And that is correct, the accident happened in Pinellas County in Palm Harbor, not in Brevard County in Palm Bay.

Also Viera has no golf cart paths and the "lakes" are retention ponds

My son lives in Viera. It has multiple "villages" built by different developers and all but one are multi-generational. Prices are all over the spectrum. They have one place for seniors called Heritage Isle. Kind of duplexes. I was looking at it, but it is in a very congested area. It is next to a public golf course and Country Club. There are lots of things to see and do in that area, but it is not a retirement community and cannot be compared to this. My son wants to get old enough to move here! And so does my other son who is looking to move to Florida. My late husband and I looked within a two hour drive from Viera for a retirement community and nothing but nothing compares to this. It is a reirement city with all the amenities and services that infers. BTW, my son teaches at Satellite Beach High.

I originally thought it had to be on the gulf coast as they airlifted her to Tampa’s hospital, but the first report said Palm Bay which hubby thought was on the east coast.


It was Palm Harbor, according to above link......Palm Harbor is in Pinellas County. The community was Westlake Village subdivision.....on west coast of Florida.

Yes, you are correct. The "breaking news" listed their town as Palm Bay when in fact it was Palm Harbor.

We lived in Satellite Beach for twelve months in 1972/73.
Our daughter began kindergarten on Patrick Air Force Base.
We returned to Vermont after that and stayed put while she and her brother went all through school up here........our son was a toddler back then. I have pictures of him at some little zoo nearby , with the one armed monkey.

They were young but still remember the coral on Satellite Beach which was virtually empty back then..........and the seashells.

You are absolutely right. I just corrected it to Duda on my first post.
However, I cannot change the "title" from Dudek to Duda.
I did know that it meant "faith".......they have a nice website.

When we were relocating to Florida we looked at Viera and also at a private golf course community in Palm Bay. We decided against Viera largely because the monthly maintenance fee was sky high and really offered very few amenities and no golf carts. As it turned out, Viera is mostly a family community. Lots of kids, schools, etc. We decided on the private golf course community in Palm Bay. The same builder was in Heritage Isle (Viera) and the golf course community (The Majors) that we bought it. Our home is The Majors cost us $40K less than if we had bought in Viera. Plus we didn't have the monthly maintenance cost. We did have a golf cart in Palm Bay that we drove to the golf course, restaurants, grocery store.

All that being said nothing compares to The Villages. TV is the most COMPLETE experience in active retirement living we have seen. So glad that we have made this our home.

The Duda family has HUGE land holdings in eastern Orange & western Brevard counties and also in Australia. Big time ranchers and farmers. At one time they were the largest growers of cabbage on the planet.

fyi ..... the Mormon church also has vast lands in the same area's of both counties.
